After learning all Zevander has been through, that line hit me hard.

No way is that how General Loyce gets taken out…I demand more drama and spectacle. I’d bet my life she shows back up…

Man these ppl are evil…Sacton Crain got his, along with the stupid town folk (the blind religious ignorance fueling cruelty is infuriating). But Loyce? Ugh, when Loyce gets hers…that will be the most gratifying. What an evil character she is.

Ok, I felt like this story dragged a bit in the first half but things are connecting and picking up. I’m impressed by and like the way she’s alternating between past and present. The past storyline immediately impacts the subsequent present chapter, so you feel an immediate payoff.

“And what would the mighty assassin call me if not beautiful?”

“I would call you the soft glow of moonlight in a pitch-black world. A prayer I never spoke aloud, but somehow the gods answered anyway. The strike of lightning I dare to behold without flinching. The reason I breathe.”

Oof…and the truth comes out. Zevander’s unapologetic possessiveness.

“Do not imagine there’s anywhere you could go, anything you could possibly say, to keep me away from you now, moon witch. I remember everything, and I will not lose you again.”

Getting multiple POVs in book 2 - Maevyth, Zevander, Kazhimyr (& Ravezio).

I’ve also grown to love Branimir…scary af but I like him…the way he took to Maevyth’s singing in book 1 was so damn sweet. And him defending his family in his current state. Who thought I’d be so smitten with the Viscious creatures in this world

“It isn’t the scar, Zevander. It’s the way you carry it, like someone who looks might turn to stone.”
“It’s a visible weakness.”
“It isn’t though. It’s a mark of your survival. Resiliency…the baby who was thrown into sablefyre and lived to become a fierce assassin for the king.”

The Crone Witch - Elowen. I like her story. So many intertwined, topsy-turvy storylines. Things are starting to connect and get fun

Rykaia is such a shit but I love her!

We’ve now graduated to dark flirting and banter 😈

So many good characters. I am getting a kick out of Rykaia’s antics…messing with her brother, Zevander. Dolion is endearing, a nerdy mage. Aleysia, Maeve’s sister is sassy, I expected Maeve to be the trouble maker, but it’s really her sister who stirs the pot. And the bad guys really are so despicable…Cadavros, Moros, Agatha, uncle Riftyne.

There is legit world building/vocab - grateful for the glossary and map. I’ve been using them a lot.

Spooky season indeed - we open with Zevander as a baby…being sacrificed…the way the mage handles him makes my skin crawl.

I’ve waited a long time to start this series. It’s finally complete and I’m ready to dive in. I adore Keri Lake’s writing. Perfect reading for spooky season. LFG
