"We willen het kind dat we ooit waren loszingen van onze volwassenheid om niet toe te hoeven geven dat een groot deel van onze persoonlijkheid al in onze kindertijd vastlag. Misschien denk je dat het leven je ongelukkig heeft gemaakt, of de liefde, maar denk na, je was al een tobber als kind."

So nerdy! And foody! And exacting! My omelette game has become pretty serious because of this book. And I like his tone.

"Fiction helps us remember that everything remains to be seen. It's a sacrament dedicated to this end. We can't always feel as open to the world as we feel at the end of a beautiful story, but feeling that way even briefly reminds us that such a state exists and creates the aspiration in us to strive to be in that state more often."

"What else do we have but what we were born with and have always, thus far, been served (and imprisoned) by? Say you're a world-class worrier. If that worry energy gets directed at extreme personal hygiene, you're "neurotic". If it gets directed at climate change, you're an "intense visionary activist.

We don't have to become an entirely new person to do better [..]"

"...the best it could have been was exactly what we intended it to be. But a work of art has to do more than that; it has to surprise its audience, which it can do only if it has legitimately surprised its creator."

Starting to feel an emotional click after nearly two hundred very well written prose... Which primarily reminded me of other books I've read about Virginia / Appalachia / Orphans / Hard living. Curious to see where this goes now.

This is a dangerous book: gorgeous, high-level visual storytelling that sucks you in. Thing is, the subject matter (and the feelings reading this give me) are so very lonely and bleak!

Paul Ehrenfest, page 16:

"Reason is now untethered from all other deeper, more fundamental aspects of our psyche, and I'm afraid it will lead us by the bit, like a drunken mule. I know that you see it as well as I do, but most of the time I feel alone, as if I were the only human being bearing witness to how far we have fallen."

This has taken a turn for the worse, or worst, and is now a series of panicky from-the-cockpit-conversations reminiscent of bad blockbuster movies ("I don't think I can hold on much longer!", "Oh my god, another rocket - incoming!", et cetera), but damnit if I'm not gonna finish this trilogy!

I used to read a lot of McEwan's work, but stopped after On Chesil Beach in 2007. One title too many? The subject matter of his books taking a direction away from my interests (or the other way around)? I don't remember.

When visiting my parents over Christmas me and my dad talked books, exchanging the physical piles of books built up over a few months. With a copy of 'Lessons' on top. It's really good so far.

Spaced on adding this to my CR-list. Great so far! A bit bumpy due to the fact that it's a collection of shorter work on a wide range of subjects, but a satisfying overview of the writer's passion and interests at the same time.
