“You may. What’s on your mind?”
“Well, if you have a dragon for a beloved, and he can take out three enforcers as if they aren’t even there, why am I still here?”
I chuckled. “He’s not exactly here right now, is he? And Emmerich has his own job to do. He’s a financial advisor and handles the investment portfolios of his entire thunder as well as others that are close to them.”

I leaned back in my chair, trying to appear as casual as I could. I wasn’t an enforcer. No, that job was quite seriously better suited for my brother. But I was Ambrosius’s beloved, and where he went, I did as well. Especially since he was carrying my child. There was no way my dragon was going to let him come down to New Orleans without me.

“Your phone is on the dresser. Reinhold asked about it several times, but I wouldn’t let him have it. I thought that maybe if…”
I stood and walked to my mate, quickly wrapping my arms around him from behind. I kissed the back of his head and simply held him for a moment.
“I should have come back sooner.” Ambrosius started to argue. “No, we’ve been over it.

“Where?” I asked, advancing on my brother. He knew how much I wanted my mate, and I could scent him everywhere, telling me he was close by.
“It won’t be quite that simple, Emmerich. We believe that your mate is Ambrosius,” Master Edison told me.
“Ambrosius. Why does that name sound familiar?”

I held out my hands, worried he’d do just that. Luckily he seemed to be willing to hear me out. I glanced over my shoulder at the door, wondering if they could hear me or not. It didn’t matter because Edison was going to tell Wallace anyway, and as my bodyguard, Atticus would know soon enough.
“No. But I’ve been alone a very long time. I don’t know how to live sharing my space.

average human I wondered if he would take over mine? I was ancient by most standards, and my portfolio was already impressive.
“Okay. But if he’s not here, and you can’t find him, why don’t you just ask Emmerich where he is?”
I stopped. “What do you mean? He’s not here. I can’t ask him.”
Atticus tilted his head at me. “Doesn’t Lucius talk to Giovanni when they’re not together?” Atticus pointed to his head, and my eyes widened.
“Figlio di puttana!” I walked off a few steps before I crouched down and tried not to fall on my ass. How could I forget our bond? How? I was supposed to know these things. I was…I’d not opened it, and it had been a week. What must he think of me? I stood and turned toward my bodyguard.
“Atticus, if you would please escort me to the house, I would be most grateful.”
Atticus nodded, then we were walking again toward the house. When it came into view, I was relieved because that seemed to have been the longest ten minutes of my life. I was simply finished. I was exhausted, hungry, yet nauseous, and I just wanted my beloved to hold me. I wanted to feel his arms wrapped around me, smell his unique scent, and sleep for a week in his arms.
When we entered the house, I immediately turned toward the elevators. “I’ll be in my quarters. If I leave again, I’ll be sure to let you know.”
Atticus nodded, then went off toward the back of the house. I knew he would probably spend time on the back deck enjoying the view. He had a room here but also had a house off the mountain.
I stepped into the elevator, and after I pushed the button, I leaned my head against the door. How could I have been so stupid?
I stood when the elevator stopped and exited as soon as the door was open. I walked straight to the back wall of windows and sat down on the couch that was there. I leaned forward, my arms on my legs, and shook my head. I wanted to kick myself. I would for the rest of time.
“Emmerich?” I said quietly, reaching out through my mind. I knew this was possible and had been told through the book I’d been gifted by the goddess how it worked. But I myself had never experienced it.
I heard something, possibly a rumbling growl? He was shifted maybe?
“Emmerich? If you can hear me, I’m so very sorry. I know that doesn’t fix things, but it’s what I have to start. I want to talk to you if you would answer.”
There was a growl this time, and I knew it had to be Emmerich. Who else would be in my mind? But if he was shifted, why wasn’t he talking to me? He should still be able to talk. Shouldn’t he? I was certain Wallace didn’t growl at Edison. Then again, maybe he did because that man was annoying at times.
No he wasn’t. I was. Okay, maybe we both were.
“Emmerich?”
I heard a roar that didn’t come through our bond. No, that was out on the mountain somewhere. I got up and walked outside onto the large stone deck. The perks of having a warlock create your house, I guess.
I looked to the sky but didn’t see anything. My heart sank a bit, but I didn’t blame him. What did I expect really? I had left without a word. Then when he’d left, I hadn’t talked to him for a week. I’d be upset with me too. Actually, I was. I was kicking myself for not having thought of our bond.
I was sure Edison would have reminded me of it if I’d seen the man this week. I’d ignored everyone, and they’d given me a wide berth whenever they’d seen me. It was a bit comical when the enforcers saw me coming anymore. They walked as far around me as possible, some going so far as to turn around and go back the other way.
I turned and slid down the wall and sat on the stone floor that was still cool from the night before.
“I’m so sorry, Emmerich. I’ve never had a beloved. I forgot about the bond, or I would have never not had it open. I don’t even know if you can hear me. I hear a dragon. Is that you?”
There was another roar, this one much louder and closer. A shadow fell over me, and I looked up in time to see a massive purple dragon above me. My mouth opened in awe. I’d only ever seen Sergei and Chin. I found Sergei a bit boring with his solid black color, but Chin was gorgeous with his gold coloring. But the dragon above me was the most beautiful one I’d ever seen.
The shimmer on the deep purple scales went from blue to green to gold, and when he kept getting bigger and bigger, I realized he was landing on my deck.
I scrambled up and moved to the far side, giving him as much room as I could. I held my breath as the large dragon’s feet landed on the rail. I hadn’t been sure the deck would hold the weight of a dragon, but perhaps Edison had thought of that when he created the house with magic?
I watched, enthralled as the body shimmered a bit, then started to shrink the same time it changed color. When Emmerich hopped down off the rail, I made a noise I’d never done before and rushed to him. I didn’t stop until my arms were wrapped around his waist, and I held on tight.
Emmerich was stiff at first, but I felt him relax just before his arms wrapped around my shoulders and he held me tightly to him.
He was here. He’d come to me. I gasped, a loud sob coming from me. I held on tighter, determined to not let him go ever again. He had come back to me, and I knew I didn’t deserve him, but I would do everything in my power to show him just how incredibly important he was to me.
Emmerich moved, his hands sliding down my back. When they grabbed my thighs just below my ass and lifted, I opened my legs and wrapped them around his waist while moving my arms up to his shoulders. I knew he wouldn’t drop me and didn’t care one bit where we were going. The only thing that mattered in that moment was that he was here with me.
I vaguely heard the door close behind us, then felt us lowering. When my feet hit the back of the couch, I moved my legs and found myself straddling my beloved. I chanced a look at him, wiping my eyes and blinking to try to see him clearly. He looked like I felt.
“I’m sorry. I screwed up, and I know it. Please forgive me. I know it’s not enough, Emmerich. It will never be enough. Ever. I will make many mistakes, I’m sure. I’m an asshole, and everyone will tell you such. I apologize that you were stuck with me.”
I had thought long and hard about what I wanted to say to Emmerich if I were given another chance from him, but now that he was actually here, those thoughts had all left me. I couldn’t think of anything I’d planned.
“Shh…” Emmerich finally said. I looked at him, shaking my head.
“I messed up big-time, and I have so much to say to you, but now that you’re here, I can’t think of anything I wanted to tell you. I know I have to apologize forever, but beyond that, my brain doesn’t want to work.”
Emmerich chuckled before he pulled me down to him. When his lips gently touched mine, I gasped. I didn’t deserve him. Not even a little.
“What was that for?” I asked when he pulled his head back after a moment.
“It stopped you from rambling, for starters.” Emmerich ran his fingers through my hair, then down my neck before he repeated the gesture. It was soothing but not nearly as much so as having him here with me.
“I’m glad you finally reached out. I agree, we need to talk. About so many things. But for now, let’s just relax together. It’s been a long and stressful week.”
“I would have sooner if I’d remembered the bond. I have notes about it in the book, and explained it to many over the centuries, but when it came time for me to have that connection with my own beloved, I forgot all about it.”
“You’ve been busy at work. I know there’s a lot going on there. Why don’t I go get dressed, and we’ll sit and chat over coffee.”
My stomach rolled at the thought of coffee, but I nodded anyway. Emmerich seemed to notice when I grabbed for my stomach though. His hands tightened on my waist, keeping me on his lap when I tried to climb off.
“What’s wrong? Are you sick? Do you need to feed? How often is that required?”
“Not frequently. I haven’t had to drink blood but once every couple of months for a long time. Centuries. You were right when you said it’s been a long week. I’ve just not slept well.”
Emmerich raised an eyebrow at me. How was it that he knew I wasn’t telling the full truth? I knew we could scent lies, and one’s heartbeat usually increased when they weren’t telling the truth. But I was. I wouldn’t have to feed from him often.
“What else is going on, Ambrosius? I can tell you’ve not slept well. And Reinhold told me what was going on at work. How can I help with either?”
I flinched at his confession. “Reinhold told you what exactly?”
“That you’ve been buried under paperwork for an ongoing issue somewhere with shifters. That’s all he said. But that you were working long hours and you stopped joining them for meals. Are you taking care of yourself?”
Emmerich ran his fingers through my hair once more and held on this time, pulling my head down toward his. My forehead gently touched his, and I simply breathed in my beloved.
“I missed you terribly and fought my dragon every second. He wanted nothing more than to come back and force you to agree to be ours.”
“I already did, Emmerich. We claimed one another. I’m yours.”
“I know. He’s not always rational, it seems.” Emmerich leaned in and kissed me quickly before he let me go. He patted my ass gently before he leaned back on the couch. “You need to move though, or he’s going to keep pushing for me to rip your clothes off of you and reclaim you all over again.”
I could get with that. That sounded like the best way to spend the day actually. I was going to voice that when Emmerich shook his head at me and pushed on my hips. I stood, and when his dick slapped up against his stomach, I groaned.
“It’ll go away. Just let me go take an icy shower.”
“Why would you want to do that?” Really, why would he want to do that?
“Because we need to talk before we fall into bed together again.”
