I leaned back in my chair, trying to appear as casual as I could. I wasn’t an enforcer. No, that job was quite seriously better suited for my brother. But I was Ambrosius’s beloved, and where he went, I did as well. Especially since he was carrying my child. There was no way my dragon was going to let him come down to New Orleans without me.

“Your phone is on the dresser. Reinhold asked about it several times, but I wouldn’t let him have it. I thought that maybe if…”
I stood and walked to my mate, quickly wrapping my arms around him from behind. I kissed the back of his head and simply held him for a moment.
“I should have come back sooner.” Ambrosius started to argue. “No, we’ve been over it.

“You may. What’s on your mind?”
“Well, if you have a dragon for a beloved, and he can take out three enforcers as if they aren’t even there, why am I still here?”
I chuckled. “He’s not exactly here right now, is he? And Emmerich has his own job to do. He’s a financial advisor and handles the investment portfolios of his entire thunder as well as others that are close to them.”

“Where?” I asked, advancing on my brother. He knew how much I wanted my mate, and I could scent him everywhere, telling me he was close by.
“It won’t be quite that simple, Emmerich. We believe that your mate is Ambrosius,” Master Edison told me.
“Ambrosius. Why does that name sound familiar?”

I held out my hands, worried he’d do just that. Luckily he seemed to be willing to hear me out. I glanced over my shoulder at the door, wondering if they could hear me or not. It didn’t matter because Edison was going to tell Wallace anyway, and as my bodyguard, Atticus would know soon enough.
“No. But I’ve been alone a very long time. I don’t know how to live sharing my space.

“No, thank you. Just the check, please,” Master Edison said, reaching for his pocket. I was ahead of him, though, and simply held up my credit card. The waiter smiled and took it. I winked at Ambrosius, who blew me a kiss. He’d warned me a few moments ago that Edison would insist he pay, and when I leaned in for that kiss, I pulled my wallet out of my pocket.
“I don’t know how you did that, but I was going to get lunch.”
“So you get dinner. No big deal,” Ambrosius said, leaning back in his own chair. He turned a bit, resting his arm across the corner, appearing to casually look around the dining area.
“Atticus is back and doesn’t look too happy.”
That couldn’t be good. I didn’t want to look too suspicious since we weren’t sure who or what exactly these guys were just yet, nor did we know how far their reach was. I pushed my chair out a bit and bent down to retie my shoe. When I did, I glanced to my right and spotted Atticus. He wasn’t alone, and I agreed with Ambrosius: he didn’t look happy.
“Here’s your card and receipt, sir. I hope you gentlemen had an enjoyable lunch and that you visit us again.” A black folder was placed next to me as I sat up. I glanced at the waiter, who continued to stare at me.
“Thank you.”
He glanced to his right before he left. I would have thought that funny until I opened the folder and took out my card. On my copy of the receipt, there was a note: Guys two tables over often leave with waiters and then the waiters never come back. They’ve been bugging me a lot lately and now they’re back. I’m worried. Please help. ~ Chase
I cleared my throat before I took the restaurant copy and handed the rest to Ambrosius with my wallet.
“Read the note on the receipt.”
Ambrosius placed the card in my wallet, then folded the receipt and put it in there as well.
“The ones that just sat down?”
“I think so. We need to help him. Is it possible those guys are the reason why Atticus isn’t happy?”
“Maybe. We won’t know until we go ask.”
I signed the receipt, adding a generous tip, then placed it and the pen back in the folder. We stood, drawing the attention of the men from the table in question. They were either really good at what they did, or Master Edison had made it like he’d said: they wouldn’t know we were paranormals. But then how did the waiter? Or maybe he didn’t and was just looking for help.
“We can’t let him be taken.”
“We’ll make sure he’s watched. Openly.”
Ambrosius was already pulling out his phone and typing on it. I helped guide him out of the dining area, walking directly past the table in question. There was a funny feeling that seemed to hit me as we passed, but I ignored it, knowing I needed to not react to anything.
It did cause me to wrap my arm more tightly around Ambrosius, who was furiously typing on his phone. I wasn’t sure what he was doing, but I was certain it was to help the young waiter.
We walked down the street toward our hotel, and when we were several blocks away, Master Edison started talking.
“What was up with the waiter?”
“What was up with that weird push?” I fired back. “The waiter said the guys that gave me a funny feeling when we walked by came around a lot, and when they did, waiters left with them and never came back,” I told him.
“That was what was on the receipt?” Wallace asked.
I nodded.
“Atticus is going to lurk around and watch the waiter. He said he scented familiar shifters. Ones from our area and they weren’t us,” Ambrosius told us.
“Who is here other than us?” I asked. I had thought we were the only ones here.
“Nobody that I know of. At least, nobody from the council. And that push was the warlock with them pushing on our auras,” Master Edison said.
“They have warlocks? Do you know him?”
“He’s not one of mine. But at this point, there are warlocks everywhere, just as Ambrose’s vampires are everywhere. And Sergei’s dragons.”
“Got it. So what do we do now? And why were they pushing on us?”
“He was trying to get a read on us. He received nothing but humans back from us,” Master Edison said. We were standing in front of our hotel now.
