And I completely missed that this MMC is the brother from “pride and protest” until the last chapter I just read.
I thought the Bennet brother was a Black Israelite who couldn’t hold down a job, and I remember him being portrayed as sort of buffoonish — so this characterization feels like a retcon. But I read that 2 years ago so perhaps I’m conflating things.

2/2 also his life is a mess but he also is able to seduce all these witnesses idk some of it doesn’t match
I also feel like they are fundamentally trying to do 2 different things. I feel like any evidence she would be able to use in her case would have to be legally obtained and given to the police. They keep pickpocketing things, deceiving people etc in a way a PI maybe? would

Something about this book reads like a first draft. It feels developmentally off like the ideas are kind of sketched out here but someone didn’t go through to connect, question or deepen them.
I also feel like Maurice’s characterization is all over the place. He’s like a black anime nerd with severe allergies, this debonair Mercedes driving/cigar smoking/materalistic Bond like detective and 1/2
