I love Highmage Bringham! I can already tell that decent men are a rarity in this book because the whole atmosphere revolved heavily on the patriarchy. The men are just deeply rooted with sexism and misogyny that it’s just considered normal in this world. The bar is gonna be in hell!

Not gonna lie, it’s a struggling trying to picture how the magic system works in this world. So, I understand why the author had to make all these metaphors to describe them in layman’s. I don’t find myself being a fan of this magic system in particular but I think I understand it enough. Also, Kwen experiencing racism and discrimination is really in par with Sciona just being a woman. I see the parallels.

The book really drives just the perfect amount of micro aggression against Sciona that manages to enrages me. It’s accurate too! Assuming that she only passed the test because she slept her way to get there. It’s very early into the book but it’s already pissing me off! Which means the author is doing a great job at painting the aggressively male landscape the world has.

The first chapter confused me by what the people were running away from. But the second chapter involving mages with a demonstration exam was really intriguing. I like Sciona as a character, she’s prideful and arrogant because she is ambitious of becoming a highmage in field dominated by men. It makes sense for her, identifying that sex don’t matter in becoming one.
