i guess i shouldn't be surprised by how dark this is, that's hardly new for hardinge. i'm a little unsatisfied with how detached from the characters i feel though. maybe it's me, but some of it is probably the chunks of narrative that aren't focused on burr, and the narrative style. hopefully it's just taking me some time and i'll be more engaged as it goes on

I got it, read the first chapter, it is very good, and I put it aside. I just do not want to read about peasants and a tyrannical feudal lord right now.

I got hooked immediately by the rhythms in the first paragraph and it was gonna happen. Thankfully not anticipating problems renewing with the library when I need to (cuz I'm slow) since there were 93 copies available when I borrowed it.
