'The resentment of the Catholic/Gaelic Irish smoldered'
Well yes. That's how folks feel when people come into their home and steal their shit.
I've heard Irish Americans wax poetic about how horrible they were treated in the UK. As I read about this civil war and the 'tensions' that led up to it I can see that more and more.
I feel sorry for those that stayed in the UK.
Those that left victimized others so, no pity

This is interesting.
I can't help but think some of the treatment of Charles I is due to his Scottish heritage. That Scots are less than seems to be accepted dogma in England. Add to that Charles is physically tiny, petulant, uncharismatic and I can see why Parliament takes him down.
I'm not a royalist ever but they just replace him with Cromwell and Lord Protector is another word for King🤷🏽♀️

Still not at the 1642 mark and I'm grateful that although this will primarily focus on England it's still giving a through run down of the events in Ireland and Scotland that ultimately set off the civil war

'In many respects the English were an obedient and orderly people. They respected the law...because they played such a large part in enforcing it.'
The English do this everywhere they colonize. They have the power to make and enforce laws.
The author pretends like because a law is violent that removes the responsibility of the violence from the creator and perpetrators of the law.
No that doesn't wash away crimes.

The Ireland & Scotland are described as violent militarized societies. Or they were being oppressed by England and not wishing to 'assimilate' into a culture that sees them as less than and uncivilized.
Which is a valid way to feel.
Rebellion is intelligent and logical under these, and pretty much any, circumstances.
I wish the author had less of an ethnic bias towards Irish and Scottish folks.

It's intensely confusing to me how Irish folks who suffered ethnic cleansing run to the America's and do the exact same thing to the indigenous folks here. Oh and heavily participate in the chattel slave trade.
The disconnect is intense.
I guess they were just excited to finally be considered white people.
I don't know but imagine history had they made common cause with Black and Indigenous folks.
But nope whiteness

This author again wants to skip over the events in Ireland and Scotland that kick off the civil wars. At the same time the author take great pains to show that the English are easy to rule, it's those Irish and Scottish folks who aren't civilized.
Not sure why the author finds being led like sheep preferable to fighting your cause.
I have very little British DNA, yay!, luckily what I do have is Irish or Scottish
