Rebecca Duvall Scott I have to just walk away and get lost in something else for a while. Chores, schooling my children, reading another book, watching a show, taking a walk, gardening - and once I take the mental break, the inspiration starts flowing again. Sometimes it takes a few hours, sometimes days to weeks - but I've learned if I'm patient and just trust myself, it will come back around.
Rebecca Duvall Scott I think the best part of being a writer for me is being able to capture timeless messages. Whether it is memoir or fiction or whatever - the message you convey to readers stays with them long after they close the book. There is power in words, especially words that create feelings. I love hearing how my writing has affected the lives of others - that our story meant something in their own!
Rebecca Duvall Scott Never give up, and find a good publisher the first time. I'm really glad I did my homework on how I wanted to publish and with who - good writers ruin their names all the time by self-publishing with good intentions. I'm also a huge fan of having an editorial board of readers to critique your work before a publisher sees it. The editorial board I picked for "Sensational Kids, Sensational Families" flagged several things I needed to improve and truly made my work the best it could be. We authors can't think of everything by ourselves! We need other perspectives to make it great and applicable to large audiences.
Rebecca Duvall Scott My dream was always to be a fiction author, so I find it interesting that my first published work was actually non-fiction and a memoir to boot! I have been working on a historical fiction novel (and its sequel) loosely based on the story of my amazing great-grandparents for years now... but I don't know which will come first - the fiction or more self-help memoir books in the same vein as "Sensational Kids, Sensational Families."
Rebecca Duvall Scott Inspiration just hits me sometimes - I have learned it isn't something I can force. I can try and capture thoughts and ideas on notepads as they come to me, but usually (mostly in the dead of night!) I suddenly think of what I need to say and have to hurry and write it out before it leaves me. While writing "Sensational Kids, Sensational Families" I often holed myself up in my room for a few days at a time to get it all out while I was in the zone. My family has gotten very good at knowing when I'm seriously writing, they're to fend for themselves until I emerge. Luckily, I have a wonderful husband and two pretty self-sufficient kids!
Rebecca Duvall Scott "Sensational Kids, Sensational Families: Hope for Sensory Processing Differences" is a boots-on-the-ground style self-help memoir born out of our family's struggles and triumphs after my son's sensory processing disorder diagnosis. I had to learn so much from scratch to help him reach his potential, and I'm happy to put the research, intervention strategies and positive mindset shifts that helped us in one place to help the next struggling family or professional looking for an edge on SPD. My son's occupational therapist also wrote professional commentary sections to compliment the raw words of a parent... so I think it is the best of both worlds! It is really the survival guide I wish I had when I found out my son needed help.
