I usually don't want to do it, but it's a job, so I get in the car and go. Same with writing. I get my coffee, sit down, and start typing. Sometimes I write a lot of garbage before I get to anything good, but I won't get there if I don't just sit and start. (less)

The Kindness of Strangers

Good news: I’m staying at a cabin in the mountains with my two dogs.

Bad news: We parked at a trailhead to go for a hike and when I got out I saw I had a perfectly flat tire.

Good news: I was able to find a level spot in the adjacent campground and put the spare on.

Bad news: The spare was flat.

Good news: There was a gas station just a couple miles down the road so we drove there and they had a worki

"The next The Song of Achilles. Beautiful. Moving. Stunning. Gut-wrenching. Two boys, secretly in love, sent to war. Haunting descriptions of WWI. This book wrecked me in every possible way.

In Memoriam is a debut, and I’m perplexed. Alice Winn sucked " Read more of this review »

This is a fast read but a rich and rewarding one. I love the psychological, subtle way Gail interprets the cards. I will continue to work with this book for a long time."

“most of life occurs in the hollows between expectation and reality.”
Baxter Clare Trautman, Hold of the Bone

“My past has absolutely no attraction for me, but meanwhile I’m stumbling around in the dark trying to find the doorknob into my future.” “The doorknob? Have you even found the damn door yet?” “No,” Frank admits. “Then quit looking for the knob! When you find the door, then you can start worrying about how to open it. ’Til then, relax.” Mary”

Baxter Clare Trautman, The River Within

“In your hands

The dog, the donkey, surely they know
They are alive.
Who would argue otherwise?

But now, after years of consideration,
I am getting beyond that.
What about the sunflowers? What about
The tulips, and the pines?

Listen, all you have to do is start and
There’ll be no stopping.
What about mountains? What about water
Slipping over rocks?

And speaking of stones, what about
The little ones you can
Hold in your hands, their heartbeats
So secret, so hidden it may take years

Before, finally, you hear them?”
Mary Oliver, Swan: Poems and Prose Poems

“A room without books is like a body without a soul.”
Marcus Tullius Cicero

“We have to dare to be ourselves, however frightening or strange that self may prove to be.”
May Sarton

“Loneliness is the poverty of self; solitude is richness of self.”
May Sarton

J.E.J. Fern Thank you!

Baxter Clare Trautman Thanks back - really liked your Jodi Picoult review. Nice work.

Parvathy Hi! Thanks for the friend request.

Baxter Clare Trautman Have you read Junger's WAR? Intense. He should have called it "Combat" as it follows a single unit in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley, and for those boys life is about fighting and surviving - not the intellectual abstractions of war. Great book!

Cate (The Professional Fangirl) Hey there! Thanks for the friend invite. I see you have Generation Kill and One Bullet Away on your to-read list. Those are my favorite books and I hope you like them! :)
