I believe in frustration and self-doubt, things that can make me pause from sitting down to do the work, but I don't believe in "writer's block". I try to remember what Hemingway said: I'm paraphrasing, but it's something like, Always make sure you stop writing while you still have something to say. Save something for the next day. I also get a lot of ideas in the shower or when I'm walking. Oftentimes if I'm not sure what to write, I'll realize that I need to do more research, and I'll go that route. (less)

Daily Writing Prompts

This year, 2018, I taught beginning Creative Writing classes using The Halfway House for Writers by Valley Haggard. Valley and her books are inspirations to me. Even after publishing three novels with Random House and Simon and Schuster, I often feel like I'm not good enough, like I don't have what it takes. Her books, especially her Halfway House, is a joyous reminder that no words are wasted, th Read more of this blog post »

Michele Young-Stone, The Handbook for Lightning Strike Survivors

“Like humans, birds mourn the loss of fledglings and mates. There are a thousand variant weeping songs to sing. I had to sign mine and get on with it. That is what I did”

“There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”
Ernest Hemingway

“If you tell a beautiful woman that she is beautiful, what have you given her? It's no more than a fact and it has cost you nothing. But if you tell an ugly woman that she is beautiful, you offer her the great homage of corrupting the concept of beauty. To love a woman for her virtues is meaningless. She's earned it, it's a payment, not a gift. But to love her for her vices is a real gift, unearned and undeserved. To love her for her vices is to defile all virtue for her sake - and that is a real tribute of love, because you sacrifice your conscience, your reason, your integrity and your invaluable self-esteem.”
Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged

“You cannot save people. You can only love them.”
Anaïs Nin

“Had I not created my whole world, I would certainly have died in other people’s. ”
Anaïs Nin

“Writing is like making love. Don't worry about the orgasm, just concentrate on the process.”
Isabel Allende
