Heya Katie :) Thanks for the question.
Dan Jenkins was mainly inspired by my fascination with vigilantes in fiction. We like them (in fiction) because they go after the bad guys nobody can/will touch. At the time, I was watching the show "Dexter" on TV. I'm a self-hating Dexter fan -- I've never been interested in serial killers in fiction because to me they're just universally bad. But Dexter was witty, and he did go after the bad guys, so I watched. With Dan, I wanted that "go after the bad guys" element without the "I sure love killing people" thing that Dexter has -- yet with a supernatural component as an element to the plot.
Dan's humor and odd outlook on life are my humor, and some of my outlook on life. (less)

Underpowered Howard

So I have a new book out, and it’s called “Underpowered Howard.” LitRPG, which means it’s set in a virtual game world where attributes and scores and points and all that matter. A little like Scott Pilgrim or Ready Player One, but with more attention to numbers. There’s a lot more to the story than math, though, or else I never would have written it. It’s funny, has great characters, and I tried t

“It wasn’t just her beauty. It was the attitude in her smile, the tilt of her head, and the loving look in her eyes when she caught me sneaking a peek down her shirt.”
John L. Monk, Kick

“Growing up, I was the champion of spiders and moths in my house, catching and releasing them for my mother at great personal risk.”
John L. Monk, Kick

“This guy was beyond lucky. He was Midas with a better attorney, or the owner of a Monkey’s Paw version 2.0, or Richard Cory on Prozac.”

“Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read.”
Groucho Marx, The Essential Groucho: Writings For By And About Groucho Marx

“I'd made the vampire cry. Great. I felt like a real superhero. Harry Dresden, breaker of monsters' hearts.”
Jim Butcher, Storm Front

“This never happens again," I said quietly. "You try to get to me through other mortals again and I'll kill you."

Mavra's rotted lips turned up at one corner. "No, you won't," she said in her dusty voice. "You don't have that kind of power."

"I can get it," I said.

"But you won't," she responded, mockery in her tone. "It wouldn't be right."

I stared at her for a full ten seconds before I said, in a very quiet voice, "I've got a fallen angel tripping all over herself to give me more power. Queen Mab has asked me to take the mantle of Winter Knight twice now. I've read Kemmler's book. I know how the Darkhallow works. And I know how to turn necromancy against the Black Court."

Mavra's filmed eyes flashed with anger.

I continued to speak quietly, never raising my voice. "So once again, let me be perfectly clear. If anything happens to Murphy and I even think you had a hand in it, fuck right and wrong. If you touch her, I'm declaring war on you. Personally. I'm picking up every weapon I can get. And I'm using them to kill you. Horribly.”
Jim Butcher, Dead Beat

“Michael half-smiled. “The Lord will never give you a burden bigger than your shoulders can bear, Harry. All we can do is face what comes and have faith.”
I gave him a sour glance. “I need to get myself some bigger shoulders, then. Someone in accounting must have made a mistake.”
Jim Butcher, Grave Peril

“I did the only thing any reasonable wizard could have done. I turned around and ran like hell.”
Jim Butcher, Death Masks
