Born in the small town of Clintwood, in southwestern Virginia’s coalfields, Adam Lawler is the son and grandson of coal miners. Determined not to work in the mines, Adam graduated from high school at age sixteen and attended Coastal Carolina Community College in Jacksonville, North Carolina, where he earned an Associates degree.

Adam continued his education at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, where he earned a B.A. in history with a minor in psychology, and a M.A. in Appalachian Studies. Finding little work for professional hillbillies, Adam went to work in the retail automotive industry,
holding several sales and finance management positions over a twenty-year time span. He also taught Western Civilization and Southe

On the other hand, if I don't write something, I won't have anything to change.

In writing my current project, "Barely Home: Back to the Hills", I completely tossed the first two chapters and the last chapters. I'm convinced the replacement text is much better than the original, but, if it hadn't been for what I originally wrote, I would never have gotten to the rest of the story.(less)

In this "risque mystery", Carter and Connie return to their roots, to Carter's childhood home in Southwestern Virginia, where they encounter a murdered family member, Carter's high school nemesis, and his ex-girlfriend, things are bound to get interesting.

I'm also working on a completely different type of novel, this one entitled "Riding America", about a man who, after his wife leaves him, embarks on a bicycle ride across the United States. It's an interesting storyline, and I'm anxious to see where it leads.

I'm also developing plans for the third book in the "Barely" series, "Barely Running". This book is just now entering the early development stage, so Carter and Connie fans, stay tuned.

Two more titles I have started working on ideas for are "The Women of the Dollar General Store of Fingerville, SC" and "Backwoods Burning". We'll see where these ideas lead.(less)

Barely Home Update

The rough, rough draft of "Barely Home", the sequel to "Barely Retired" is now complete. I am beginning the process of rewriting the story, and hope to have it somewhat close to its final form sometime in July.

The completion of the rough, rough draft is important because it tells me that the story of Carter and Connie Sykes will contimue. The hard part, dreaming up and imagining the story, is over Read more of this blog post »
