Listopia > Kingdom Adventure Books
Kingdom Adventure novels are set in completely fictional worlds with no universe tie-ins with earth AT ALL without magic, different natural laws, other races besides humans, portals, or any other fantasy elements. This subgenre is acts almost as a cross between fantasy and historical fiction.

I'm just a wee bit confused..."blushes"...am I supposed to add books to this or....vote?I think maybe the Restorer series by Sharon Hinck might apply...and maybe Dragonspell by Donita K. Paul but...I'm a little unclear on the definition.
I'm under the weather and have massive brain fog this evening....

Sorry, I invited people and should have explained. XD If you read this (https://intuitivewritingguide.wordpre...) and think you have read any books that apply to what the post describes, add them to the list, or vote for any you've read/liked... It's just that there hasn't been a name for this genre before and it's needed one (some people have used "non-magical fantasy" to describe it but these don't actually have fantastical things, they're just in another world, but aren't historical...) so I'm excited is all. XD I've been wondering what other books people have read that fit this category, now that there's a name for it. :)
(Dragonspell is fantasy; I haven't read the other one so I don't know what it is. :))

Ahhh - oookay - thanks! In that case, Dragonspell doesn't count (it has magic) but the Restorer series should! :)

I removed the Restorer series, actually, Allison, although I love the series, because it has tie-in's to earth and the post clearly says this, " Historical fantasy is fantasy elements added to real-world Earth History. Kingdom Adventure is a purely fictional world with no in-universe ties to Earth."
I also removed the Ilyon Chronicles, which I love too, beacuse they have other races in them, which kindgom adventure doesn't.
I put the link to the article in the desription so people can find it faster. ;)
Kate wrote: "Princess Academy has special powers in it, sorta. ;)"But they are not inherently magical abilities - they are in-born telepathic abilities.
Deborah wrote: "Is The Restorer portal fantasy?"Yes, the main character goes through a portal to another land.

Yep! I love that book and have no problem with it. I was just wondering if it fit into the definition since it has "different natural laws". ;)

I think so, Kate. Even if it's natural magic that's a part of a person or the land's natural laws, it's not kingdom adventure, but probably some type of low fantasy.
Karis wrote: "Kate wrote: "Allison wrote: "Kate wrote: "Princess Academy has special powers in it, sorta. ;)"But they are not inherently magical abilities - they are in-born telepathic abilities."

That's how I'd personally classify it too, Karis. ;)
Oh. 'blushes' 'mumbles' I shouldn't be here....I get too confused by genre definitions.

Oh, you're okay, Allison. I'm normally too, but a friend of mine's sister helped out with the naming of this genre, and she sent me the link to the post which was very clearly definite on things. She did a great job with it. I'm so glad there's a name for this genre.
Karis, The Spy Princess should be removed because the middle section of the book definitely has prominent magic. That disqualifies it even though the rest if the book would qualify. (LOL, I actually hated the middle section and thought it and the magic was pointless. I wish the book fit the kingdom adventure category!)

I'm outta here...
Mary - I hated that part too! 'fumes'

It's complicated (to me) at the best of times and I'm just struggling with brain fog today!
Karis, just so you know, Melanie Dickerson's Hagenheim are actually historical fiction. They are set in Germany and England. So glad to see this getting out.

Oh good, I wasn't the only one that got confused - LOL!

I wondered... I've only ever read one of her books, and it's been so long ago I didn't remember if it was historical or fantasy. I'll remove all of those. Thanks for letting me know. Since anyone can add to the list, sometimes books get on there when they don't belong.

I've read 4 of hers. They're pretty good.

(Just had to say, Allison, that I love the gif! National Treasure is such a fun movie, and Riley's always been my favorite character!)
I added Ranger's Apprentice, minus the first two books. (I think it was mentioned on the blog post somewhere?)Do you think Merlin's Blade would count? It's been a while since I read it, and I remember some Druid stuff...not sure if that counts as magic or not.

Merlin's Blade is Historical Fantasy in our world. Definitely some fantasy elements especially later. :)
Oh, isn't Knightly Academy alternate history here?

It ticks all the boxes, but the Wargals and Kalkara DO exist, even in the books they don't show up in. So technically it's not Kingdom Adventure.

Ahhh, okay! That makes sense.
As for Knightley Academy... I don't know? You're probably right! I remember not being fully sure WHAT genre I would classify it as, but that it felt kind of London-ish as far as setting goes.

True, true. *sigh* I'm not sure how to remove books from the list, so someone who does can feel free to take RA off! XD

:) I've been getting rather technical where this genre is concerned.

That's a good thing! If we're not technical, classifying genres doesn't help much.

About Knightley Academy, I'm not sure it belongs, but I could be wrong. For those who haven't read it, it takes place in two countries that seem based on England and Scotland/Russia, but aren't. They have different names and characteristics even though they're similar. So it's kind of unclear whether it's our world or another world based on ours (if that helps at all).
I'm not sure on the genre for that one - it could go either way - but someone else can call it. :)

HAHA - I think for a few wonderful minutes - I HAD blanked that part of the book from my memory. 'scowls'

My memory is that it's an alternate history, as I believe it was pretty much called England etc., with a Jewish boy and a boy from India and various same places but just with an alternate history where they still had knights etc.; alternate history like Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell (which is England, etc., just with magic and an alternate history of a different king and stuff, for example). So I THINK Knightley Academy is alternate fiction, BUT it's been quiiiite awhile since I read it so I don't know if I'm remembering correctly or not. :)

Yeah, it felt a lot more like historical fantasy minus the fantasy...which is alternate history, like you said. :P I think what I was remembering was just that the antagonist country was based on Scotland but communist and not called Scotland - but yeah, that still fits alternate history.
LOL, none of us remembers fully! But I think the conclusion is that the book doesn't belong. :)

I was just looking at reviews of Knightley Academy and people were saying that it's alternate history set in Victorian England. Alternate history isn't considered Kingdom adventure because it's still set in this world. (In the article defining Kingdom Adventure, there's a link to another post that really helps break down just what Kingdom Adventure isn't which has been really helpful to me.) Thanks for trying to sort that out, girls. I'll remove that book then.

And Kingdom Adventure, we realize, has fewer books than we thought, because there are a LOT of rules about it. XDDDD
Deborah wrote: "And Kingdom Adventure, we realize, has fewer books than we thought, because there are a LOT of rules about it. XDDDD"Aww... thanks, Mary. I do love having GR librarian privileges in order to help out people. The process is relatively easy to apply as a GR librarian if any of you girls ever thought about becoming one. I just had to answer a couple of questions, and it really doesn't come with any strings. Here's the link: https://www.goodreads.com/help/show/1...
@ Deborah Yes, indeed. Kingdom Adventure is a rather narrow subgenre of a subgenre really.
Deborah wrote: "And Kingdom Adventure, we realize, has fewer books than we thought, because there are a LOT of rules about it. XDDDD"Hahaha! Yes. But for the books that DO qualify, it's a life-saver! Cause they need somewhere to fit, and they fit nowhere else. Every book needs a home genre, however tiny! This is the genre I love best, and the genre I write, so I'm very glad to have a name and qualifying guidelines.
