Samantha wrote: "Why would Lover Reborn by J.R. Ward be on here? It wasn't dark or erotic."I think because of the other books within the series put JR Ward in this grouping.
Question: how did "The Reluctant Dom" by Tymber Dalton ever get on this list? None of the guideline themes apply to this book. For that matter, IMO, wrong to include the following:
"Lover Reborn" (as someone already noted)
"Under Mr. Nolan's Bed" by Selena Kitt (taboo, yes, but that's not a theme listed here)
"Comfort Object" by Annabel Joseph (BDSM, yes but NOT dark)
"Surrender" by Lora Leigh (you're kidding, right? it's tamer than "Comfort Object")
"A Good Student" by Elliot Mabeuse (BDSM, yes but NOT dark)
"Heidi and the Kaiser" by Selena Kitt (hell, this is BDSM-lite, especially for SK)
"Sinful" by Charlotte Featherstone (oh c'mon! it's HQN Spice)
"Wicked Burn" by Beth Kery (sex was hot but relationship didn't involve BDSM)
+ 2 Gena Showalter books
I hope someone can clean up the list. Great to have handy and updated as new books come out.
ETA: soon wrote: "I hope someone can clean up the list. Great to handy and updated with as new books come out. "I think the creator of this list has the ability to clean it up. I often refer to these lists when looking to read a book in that particular category. It really sucks when people can't follow simple directions and completely screw up the list. Other books that shouldn't be here include.
"Fifty Shades" Nothing dark or dubious, just a control freak
"The Darkest Seduction" that's just a joke
"Exit to Eden" No where near dark, It was all consensual
"Nobody's Hero" BDSM in the confines of a club, totally safe
"Bared to You" They are engaged in a completely consensual non-BDSM relationship"Club Shadowlands" completely consensual inside the club
"Mercy" completely consensual - although there is a disturbing scene that damages their relationship for quite a while
"Dark Citadel" pretty much completely consensual club environment
"Comfort Object" there is some coercion to get her to take the job but she could have refused
"Safeword Matte" like all of Candace Blevins's books the level of BDSM can make some uncomfortable but everything is utterly consensual (in this book for instance, she wants to play without a safeword and he refuses)
I am never sure whether to laugh or cry at this particular list.
Michael wrote: "..."Club Shadowlands" completely consensual inside the club...Yeah, I figured but I only read the first 2 in MOS series so didn't want to assume mind of whoever posted it.
Michael wrote: "..."Mercy" completely consensual - although there is a disturbing scene that damages their relationship for quite a while..."
Yep, exactly why I left it alone. That one part was controversial but I thought things iffy for a stretch of their relationship.
Michael wrote: "..."Comfort Object" there is some coercion to get her to take the job but she could have refused
Ha! I thought exact thing! But then I considered it was outside the realm of sex.
As for crying or laughing, I'd say both. Definitely not scientific but a tiny clue into the how and why of the Fifty Shades of Fiasco.
Huh, re-reading my original post, I can tell I pooped out at the end after typing all those quotes and parentheses. Need more coffee...
ETA: soon wrote: "Yeah, I figured but I only read the first 2 in MOS series so didn't want to assume mind of whoever posted it."3 of the Shadowlands books could qualify as Dark Erotica
- the third, because of her past relationship
- the fifth, the actions of the slavery ring
- the sixth, because of her attempt to recovery from the slavery
Of course, both "To Command and Collar" and "Slave" are actually consensual relationships for most of the books - although a big part of both stories is her coming to terms with that fact.
ETA: soon wrote: "Michael, worth reading rest of MOS series? Can't remember why I stopped after 2...maybe got bored."I thought the first 2 were the least interesting. The next 2 were much improved and the last 2 even better - the 6th book is on my favorites list.
Samantha wrote: "... I think the creator of this list has the ability to clean it up. ..."Hi, Samantha! Good to know. Figured there had to be some way for whoever created this to monitor activity. As for FSOG, I didn't even want to bother with it ;-)
OMG, I just realised that there's a second page...OK, coffee re-fill.
ADDED: I can't take it... Kate Douglas's Wolf Tales, along with a Laurann Dohner and Sunny book...seriously??? And none of Annabel Joseph's books fit here. *sign* Someone else can pick up the reigns.
ALSO, just because I laughed at the title, never read it but not so sure about "Caught In A Werewolf Gangbang" *lol*
Michael wrote: "...I thought the first 2 were the least interesting. The next 2 were much improve..."Ah...probably why I stopped :) I know I got 2 or 3 more so maybe I'll take another shot at it. Thanks!
And thanks to you too, Diane. Hat tip for this list!
Diana wrote: "I also edited the list's description at the top. Maybe that will help. "Diana,
Thank you for all your efforts. We really appreciate all your time and effort. And if I see that pesky Ana Steele and her friend make an appearance again, I will be sure and let her know.
There are tons of books on this list that really do not qualify for this list. The Megan Hart books for instance, those are not BDSM - nor do they contain any of the elements listed, but they are dark reads.
I ♥ Bookie Nookie wrote: "The Megan Hart books for instance, those are not BDSM - nor do they contain any of the elements listed, but they ar..."Dirty is on here because it deals with incestuous rape that took course over a few years. I voted for it too, should I remove the vote? Here I am complaining about this list and I may be causing some of the problems. LoL..I voted for a Laurann Dohner book too. Yikes ;o)
I have the ability to do it, but since I'm not the creator, I didn't want to go thru and edit anything.
Samantha wrote: "I ♥ Bookie Nookie wrote: "The Megan Hart books for instance, those are not BDSM - nor do they contain any of the elements listed, but they ar..."Dirty is on here because it deals with incestuous..."
Samantha,I would say that Dirty should not be on here b/c it's not BDSM and noncon. That's just my opinion.
I do agree that it is a dark read, just not a dark BDSM read.
Diana wrote: "Feel free to moderate. I don't read much erotica anymore, so it's hard for me to tell what should be on the list and what shouldn't. "It gets tricky even if you do read a lot. Personally, I would never ever vote for Comfort Food based on the criteria and yet it ranks 3rd on the list.
Some books are easy to remove. Others are more open to interpretation.
Diana wrote: "Michael wrote: "Comfort Food would fall under dubious consent and maybe coercion."Quoting from above, "I do agree that it is a dark read, just not a dark BDSM read." I think it is a great example of Stockholm Syndrome, but I don't think that makes it BDSM or even Dark BDSM. But again, I realize I hold the minority opinion on that.
I'm so sorry - but my feelings haven't changed since I wrote my review. But I will revise try and loosen my definition a bit and vote for Consequences. :)

These is not a dark BDSM only list. Forced consent, and dubious consent are also qualifiers so that opens up a lot more books to the list that have no BDSM in them.
I'm sorry, I read the description wrong... When I read it, I read it to say: Dark BDSM that includes... themes of rough sex, edge play, coercion, forced seduction, dubious consent, captor/captiveI think I am going to have to dip out on this list b/c it is getting a little too muddled with books that don't really belong. :-)
In regards to Dirty by Megan Hart... it's been a long time since I read it, but the non-con is a memory, right? We don't read that it happens in the book, right? Although this book is emotionally dark, I would not consider a memory of a rape to be enough to have it on the list, but that's just me.
I ♥ Bookie Nookie wrote: "In regards to Dirty by Megan Hart... it's been a long time since I read it, but the non-con is a memory, right? We don't read that it happens in the book, right? Start a new List Bookie Nookie and help us out, cause I like dark erotica and would hate to read something from this list and find I was mislead. I haven't read enough dark erotica to create a list.
There are two other lists already - BDSM Slave-Capture Stories and BDSM - TPE Stories - if that helps (although I have to laugh when I see Club Shadowlands on the TPE list).
Samantha wrote: "I was hoping for a Dark Erotica list, not a BDSM only list, oh well."So you are looking for a non-BDSM Dark Erotica list? I will have to think about what I would add to that.
Michael wrote: "(although I have to laugh when I see Club Shadowlands on the TPE list)."OMG!!! DO NOT get me started on that!
I have a Fem-Dom list and It drives me nuts when all those Cherise Sinclair books show up! Ok, just b/c there is BDSM does not mean it belongs on the list!

Michael wrote: "So you are looking for a non-BDSM Dark Erotica list? I will have to think about what I would add to that."Any book containing abduction, rape, dubious consent, forced seduction would qualify. There are plenty Dark erotica books that are not based on the BDSM lifestyle. That's what I was hoping to find with this list but as you can see...
I ♥ Bookie Nookie wrote: "I have a Fem-Dom list and It drives me nuts when all those Cherise Sinclair books show up."
I haven't read any of her books. I take it they all male dominant ;o)
Samantha wrote: "I haven't read any of her books. I take it they all male dominant ;o) ..."LOL.. yes :-) They are also sugar kink/glitter kink. I like them, but they are not dark - especially the ones early on in the series. They have gotten progressively darker though.
I think Dark erotica has become more socially acceptable and mainstream writers are dipping their toes in the water. I like to read it now and then but not mixed in with BDSM. I prefer a good old fashioned kidnapping or love slave. Lol
Samantha wrote: "I think Dark erotica has become more socially acceptable and mainstream writers are dipping their toes in the water. I like to read it now and then but not mixed in with BDSM. I prefer a good old f..."I am partial to all of the above!
Diana wrote: "I also removed "dark BDSM" from the list's description. I think some readers new to BDSM fiction assume it's all dark, which of course, most of it is not."LMAO! So true :-)

I also wouldn't think this would qualify, but I haven't read them:The books by Eiichiro Oda
This is taboo, but not dark:
This is not dark:
Diana wrote: "I ♥ Bookie Nookie wrote: "I also wouldn't think this would qualify..."Okay, thanks! Those have been removed. I'm still not sure about the Joey Hill books, because I haven't read them either. May..."
Sure! It is frustrating when the wrong books get added to the list, but this is definitely not the only one affected by this, I see it all the time!
Diana wrote: "I ♥ Bookie Nookie wrote: "I'm still not sure about the Joey Hill books, because I haven't read them either."I've only read the 4th one and that one can definitely stay on.
Thanks for adding mine to the list Diana. I made a list for
"Best Fantasy, Steampunk & Science Fiction BDSM
Sexually explicit fiction with kinks & fetishes that ventures into created worlds. (Not PNR - see Paranormal BDSM list)"
and yet someone kept adding a book called Bloodlust with a vampire on the front!
Amazing how people don't read the list description.
Ruth wrote: "Gabriel's inferno is NOT dark erotica.."HAHAHAHAHA! Oh! I just LOVE it when a great list gets watered down with the WRONG BOOKS! NOT!
I would definitely agree - not Dark Erotica
I deleted all the Kristen Ashley books as well as the Sookie series by Charlaine Harris and all the freaking Lisa Kleypas books. WTF? Who is adding all these books?
There are a bunch of books on there that I am not sure about, so if you notice any more let me know and I will delete them.
46 Lisa Renee Jones wasn't dark! Someone's having a laugh I think, shame as it's a great list of some genuinely dark reads.
There are a heap of straight BDSM books. I don't think consensual BDSM is ever called dark erotica?I would have thought all the Club Mephisto books were simply hard core BDSM TPE relationships too but Joellen tagged them dub con so I'm not sure now.
All Candace Blevins are consensual BDSM. I think she'd be horrified to be classed in dark erotica where consent is really iffy if not downright gone.
But ...I just reread the requirement of the list and 'heavy' S/m is allowed so that leaves the gate wide open for adding many BDSM books. It would've made more sense to not have those included, I think. According to this definition, I have friends who engage in darkly erotic acts and that's plain odd, and incorrect.
Maybe dark erotica isn't clearly defined as yet?
Cari wrote: "I would have thought all the Club Mephisto books were simply hard core BDSM TPE relationships too but Joellen tagged them dub con so I'm not sure now. "If you look in the back of one of Annabel's book, she classifies her books as "Erotic Romance" with the exception of the first two CM novels - they get classified as "Erotica." Personally, I think where they lie on the Con/Dub Con line is part of what the reader has to decide. Burn For You - definitely a Romance.

I am not sure what actually horrifies Candace and I am not sure that I want to find out. Because her novels tend to test my limits as a reader.
Michael wrote: "Cari wrote: "I would have thought all the Club Mephisto books were simply hard core BDSM TPE relationships too but Joellen tagged them dub con so I'm not sure now. "If you look in the back of one..."
LOL I know what you mean. I beta read Safeword Quinacridone. It was terribly kinky but, to me, if it's consensual it isn't 'dark erotica'.
This is wikimedia's definition:
Erotic horror, alternately noted as Dark Erotica, is a term applied to works of horror fiction in which sensual or sexual imagery (or even descriptions of the physical act of sexual intercourse) are blended with horrific overtones or story elements.
I don't think I quite agree with that definition.
But I do agree that the Con/Dub Con line is sometimes best decided by readers.
Maybe the problem here is the different levels of readers... if you have just started reading BDSM, I could see how you *might* consider some of Annabel's books as "dark". I know my idea of "dark" has changed significantly over the years :-)
That's the trouble with these lists...
Yes, Bookie Nookie. Absolutely. After I wrote the above, I saw the aptness of saying horror plus erotica is dark erotica because what is horror to each of us will vary depending on how we perceive the story. The concept of horror adapts to each reader's perception. And so a book about a loving sadist who listens to safe words may be dark to one reader while to another dark is a book about a man dragging away someone and doing unspeakable things to their body even though they are screaming no.
I also saw that consent isn't always the issue. A story where a woman allows a vampire to drain her of her blood and slowly kill her while she experiences extreme ecstasy is both consensual and horror and dark erotica because the reader can see she is dying.
That fascinates me. Depending on whose eyes we see through - the woman, vampire, or if we just be aware of ourselves as the reader watching a woman die, the story changes. Dark erotica has so much more potential than pure romance.
Anyway, back to the list, I guess most of the books on here might be dark to someone.
