,

The character struggles with self-esteem and has a body image disorder such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, anorexia athletica, orthorexia, or any other sort of dysfunctional behaviour around fixated eating and/or exercising.

The disorder is usually an extensive coping mechanism for a seemingly unsolvable life situation/problem, a method of dealing with unapproachable long-term trauma.

Emma Sea what an interesting list. Gotta think about this one.

Thank you, Emma! I look forward to your further thoughts!

I'm always drawn to struggles that men have compounded due to gender prejudice, such as domestic violence and, as this list reflects, eating disorders.

I was on a webby for eating disorders (http://mengetedstoo.co.uk/stories/per...), looking up information about men and eating disorders, reading the "personal stories" section, and immediately thought an m/m romance could give these issues life.

Lilia Ford have to think on this one for a while.

Emma Sea I can't remember the name of the online fic with the guy who is kidnapped and ends up being unable to eat because it's the only control he has. But would that count?

message 5: by Tara (new)

Tara Spears I added Heavyweight. Although YA, the protag has an eating disorder.

K.A. Merikan Hm Hm, I'm thinking of adding Special Needs The MC has Body Integrity Identity Disorder, and it's huge driver of the story, but it's not a 'coping mechanism for a seemingly unsolvable life situation/problem'. Then again, it could be interesting because of the body image disorder.

Any opinions?

I added it to avoid you having to vote for it as author. Definitely meets the criteria.

K.A. Merikan Thanks :) It's always tricky about adding your own books.

message 9: by Emma Sea (new)

Emma Sea Yeah, I definitely think it's different if it's a "book that contains xxx" list, rather than a "best books evah!" list, but some readers hate it either way. If some authors could be trusted not to add their books to the latter kind, in "genius" schemes, we wouldn't have this problem.

Several of the books that occurred to me involved cutting which seemed in the same kind of spirit, but were not specifically eating disorders.

kimberly_rose Note to self: Once Unicorns and Rainbow Poop (YA) by Sam Kadence is released (Nov 2014) and/or added to GR, put that book on this list too.

Hi, Niki, your het book is off the list now. Sorry for any confusion. <3 Well wishes to you.

Mark Alexander Wow, definitely the list I didn't know I needed!
