THE GREAT NATURALISTS by Robert Huxley says that Aristotles appointment of Theophrastus to succeed him as head of the Lyceum “was controversial.” I wonder why? I am not a scholar by a long shot but I thought there might be another Gary Corby story in the answer?

On the controversial, I don't know, but I suspect it was academic jealousy from rivals. Happens all the time in universities to this day.
The appointment can't be a job for Nico & Diotima though, unfortunately. At that date Nico would have been about 180 years old.
