The Dark was inspired by a dream I had had many years ago. I remember waking up in a sweat, feeling this overwhelming sense of dread coming from the closet. I was in kind of a semi-lucid state, and I remember sitting up and pointing to the closet ... and then I shouted, "Get OUT!" several times at whatever I felt was lurking beyond the door. True story.
