“একটি ডকুমেন্টারি দেখছিলাম টুইন টাওয়ারে আটকে পড়া মানুষগুলোর মৃত্যুর মুখোমুখি দাঁড়িয়ে করা শেষ মোবাইল কল এবং টেক্স মেসেজগুলো নিয়ে। মানুষ ধোঁয়া আর আগুনের হলকার মধ্যে দাঁড়িয়ে হাতে যে কয়েক মুহূর্ত পেয়েছে, তাতে যোগাযোগ করার চেষ্টা করছে তার প্রিয়জনের সঙ্গে। মা, স্ত্রী, স্বামী, ভাইকে একটা কি দুটো বাক্য বলতে পেরেছে তারা। আমি লক্ষ করছিলাম, প্রায় সবাই একটি বাক্য অবধারিতভাবে বলছে, ‘আমি তোমাকে ভালোবাসি।’ মনে পড়ছিল, সম্প্রতি আমাদের দেশের বিডিআরের ঘটনার সময়েও এমনি কয়েকজন অফিসার মৃত্যুর মুখোমুখি দাঁড়িয়ে প্রিয়জনকে ফোন করেছিলেন। তাঁদের আত্মীয়দের সাক্ষাত্কারে লক্ষ করেছি অনেকের ক্ষেত্রেই শেষ বাক্যটি ছিল, ‘আমাকে মাফ করে দিও।’ আমি ভিন্ন দুই দেশে মানুষের অন্তিম বয়ানের এই সাংস্কৃতিক ভিন্নতার ভাবনায় তাড়িত হই। কেন এক দেশের মানুষ মৃত্যুর আগে প্রিয়জনকে তার ভালোবাসাটি নিশ্চিত করবার ব্যাপারে এতটা উদগ্রীব আর আরেকটি দেশে মানুষ তার প্রিয়জনের কাছে ক্ষমাপ্রার্থী?”
