The Disorganization society is an interesting subject to critique from the outside. The young white men who proclaim that they value differing perspectives and champion the small folk do not actually recruit people from all ranks of society or minorities unless the council deems them worthy, the criteria of which is still exclusionary to their own internal biases

Anequs is back at the school and we get to see how her peers see her after the events of the first book. Marta brings forth the typical worries of young, noble white women in Western society which we are all familiar with - but Anequs provides a very different perspective on those concerns. It's quite refreshing

The first quarter of the book is unfortunately pretty slow and a bit uninteresting :/ not sure that I would have powered through if I hadn't been listening to the audiobook

Once you hit the backstory to the mystery, it's just one hit after another. Like wdym, there's surprise incest, polygamy, family curses, and generational serial killers?? 😭😂

I really tried to stomach the style of narration but this really isn't my cup of tea. The crow tries too much to be flippant, the insertion of different character POVs in snippets to move the story along feels a bit cheap, and the whole fight tourney is overdone in this genre atp. Maybe the second half of this story will improve but I'm not holding out a lot of hope

God, Cora is the final boss of clingers and I can't even blame Delilah for wanting to get away from her. Feeling contempt for this character who can't do anything for herself and got her weird but somewhat endearing friends killed along the way

The writing is as corny as I hoped it would be lol. FMC's core trait is 'coy', MMC's is 'stoic', they are unreasonably obsessed with each other even in situations that don't involve the other at all, and the Super Serious and Totally Deep one-liners are hilarious sprinkles in the YA prose

But also, this has all the hallmarks of a edgy dark fantasy/paranormal romance. It's gonna be sooooo cheesy bc WDYM she's accosted by men left right and center but she's able to fend them off with magic or a gun aimed at the crotch then goes about her day like it's nothing? And ofc there's the stoic, powerful billionaire MMC who keeps her at arm's length yet has a soft spot for her 😂

Nahri panics during her royally appointed medical test, ditches her patient mid-procedure, to hang out with Ali in a poorly disguised attempt at a love triangle.

Honestly, this story has the elements to be interesting and it just... Isn't.

Idk how I feel about a pet otter. Why is the princess who got accepted into a warrior school bringing it along? As adorable as they are, zookeepers constantly point out that they smell like fish.

Feels like having a cute sidekick for the sake of it at this point
