Did not like the chapter on “well eating” went a little off topic IMO and pulled in stuff about communion and the dinner table, and pesticides and the law… 🤔 I’m not offended, but I didn’t find it helpful or completely on target 😂

I think she got in my head and then wrote a book about it 😂😅

Sacrifice so others can see, or for your own convenience and comfort is not serving the Lord gladly.

Sharp! In a good way

Really encouraged by the chapter on motherhood. Reminders of eternity, or the fleeting season with littles and the value of training and obedience early. Reminders to have my own heart in submission and to cultivate their little hearts.

Meh, some of this book is just not my favorite, but also some it is very 1800s and so I’m trying to keep the context in mind. This is not one I will read again:

“The purest delicacy on the fat soul of a religious person is that crusty layer of conscience, seared. There is no hypocrite like the religious hypocrite… if you can get her to overlook, to hide sin, to laugh at sin.. she will suffer-how she will suffer! But if she ever gets to realize she could live day in and out with a clear conscience-the shame we enjoy most would dry up.“

“My dear Hemlock, I’ll answer your first question first. You asked, which is better: to encourage your woman to start a fight with the husband about what he did, or to encourage her to ignore what he did and punish him with silence. The answer is – yes”

The chapter on confession of sin is worth the whole book. But so far it’s all just excellence.

“As always, it is crucial that the passage not be studied independent of its immediate and larger context, for whether or not it’s circulated in that form at one time, it is now solidly emeshed within a canonical setting and must be understood in those terms.”

So back and forth on this book. Parts I feel compelled to skim, parts I have fallen asleep… parts I have loved and are so beautiful.

I’m enjoying chapter 2 very much!

“YHWH himself reminded His people that they could not obtain His favor through rituals. Rather, He called them to worship Him from the heart in response to His gracious and lavish promises. Consumed w His love and grace towards them, they could respond by loving what He loved; truth and peace (8:19).It seeks not His good gifts but the Giver Himself. The distinguishing mark of every true believer- Jew or gentile.

Not sure what I expected but not loving it so far. It’s not bad, but not my favorite.

“His people will surround Him in worship even as He will surround them with His presence”

Felt redundant on some parts, but I have been helped in my daily application of seeking to have a humble, worshipful heart. I also think awareness of my own sin and heart posture has been exposed more. I’ve noticed subtle ways I am focusing more on my own agenda with selfishness! Praise the Lord, His mercy is more! I would hear myself say something and be able to apply a situation from this book!
