We are broken, shattered, hollow and alone. Only for the ones we love do we remain, painted dolls in the playhouse of this life. In them we must find our meaning. In them we must hold to hope.

This whole idea that we’re helpless and need saving was pushed on us from birth. It’s probably part of our DNA.
We’re always looking to others for it. Parents, teachers, friends, spouses, our jobs, our leaders. Someone, anyone. Save us. Save ME.

these days it’s impossible to avoid seeing what other killers have done, or at least how many they were accused of killing. It’s all available on the internet. The Night Stalker, for example, along with BTK, the Hillside Stranglers, Son of Sam, Ted Bundy.
I suppose their numbers are low because they got caught. They weren’t careful enough, weren’t patient enough. And they didn’t get rid of the bodies.

Nothing is more boring than money.
....
However…
Now that I’m being blackmailed, my opinion has changed. Why didn’t I do the boring thing and get a little extra for myself? It feels so silly that I ignored the opportunity.

Dr. Linnaeus divided the human race into four main racial branches—Americanus (red-skinned, stubborn, easily angered); Asiaticus (avaricious, diabolical); Africanus (careless, unreliable); and Europeanus (clever, stable, really very nice).
Subraces were designated wild men, dwarfs, troglodytes (primitives), and “lazy Patagonians” (South Americans).

With body snatching big business, British lawmakers passed the Murder Act in 1751. As if execution weren’t enough, the law prohibited the decent burial of a hanged murderer’s body. Not coincidentally, it also ensured fast delivery of corpses to doctors and anatomists, who stood waiting by their tables.

Microbes challenge my very understanding of myself—what am “I,” in the end, if half of me isn’t me, and the half of me that isn’t me dictates some of “my” thinking and feeling? What does it mean to be a person whose consciousness, whose love and longing and fear, can be snuffed out by an overgrowth of bacteria that neither love nor long nor fear? How absurd that I can be murdered by that venomous little atom!

Framing illness as even involving morality seems to me a mistake, because of course cancer does not give a shit whether you are a good person. Biology has no moral compass. It does not punish the evil and reward the good. It doesn’t even know about evil and good.

Treating disease—whether through herbs or magic or drugs—is unnatural. No other animals do it, at least not with anything approaching our sophistication. Hospitals are unnatural, as are novels and saxophones. None of us actually wants to live in a natural world. And yet we tell ourselves that some—and only some—lives end naturally (which really means “acceptably” or “well”).

As Barbara Duden has written, “Pain is in the body. It leaves no trace for the historian, unless complaints about it are recorded.” But I wonder if we also ignore illness because of our bias toward agency and control. We would like to imagine that we captain the ships of our lives, that human history is largely the story of human choice.
