Part 1 spans from page 7 - 147. It was a thick read portraying the life of the noble in 1805s Kingdom of Russia with the French army constant lingering at their frontier.
It were not a single page that did not depict some sort of social convention. With this theme the book was filled with lot of dialogue and a whole lot of character introductions. And with a whole lot I mean a whole lot. I have never read anything with remotely the similar amount of character introductions as War and Peace by Leo Tolstoj. About now it is 20 characters I know pretty in depth on how they act and their social status in the noble hierarchy of Petersburg and Moscow, and that is only 147 pages in, 20 characters!
With this said I am not bored at all about the absence of action, fighting, fantasy and other sort of poignant themes. Tolstoj makes it very amusing and immersive in these pages. For example following 3 bachelors rambling trough Petersburg making escapades or following a broke and stressed widow doing everything for her son to inherit a fortune from a dying prince makes me swallow all these pages with my heart beat raising and my hands gripping the book tighter as I do so.
The question I have is if the book will continue portraying only social conventions and if so am I still gonna be as bound to it? It is 1600 pages long and already after 147 pages I am pretty filled up with conversations and so on. Will he portray the war and give a break from all the conventions or is it the opening part that is tougher to get through considering the amount of introductions to all the characters? Or maybe it will keep going about the same topic but will still immerse me and keep me devouring pages?
I am looking forward a lot to see how this develops and must say that I am very pleased to how part 1 have introduced me to this renown classic. Only 1400 pages left! Let´s go!
