By the summer of 407, Spartans had as much expertise at sea as the Athenians (p. 207). One of the clashes was close to Arginousai islands, Spartans lost 77 ships while Athenians only 25; but people in Athens were fury as generals didn’t pick up shipwrecked Athenians (p. 208). All generals were condemned to death and executed (p. 208). Athenians turned down another offer of peace from Sparta, by 405 Sparta had 150 ships and Athens 180 (p. 208). Athenian were unprepared for Lysandro’s attack, all but 10-12 ships were captured or destroyed, 3000 men lost their lives and the rest ran away; Athens surrendered (p. 209). Lysandros left Athenians to sort their own constitutional affairs; which led to a civil war between democrats and oligarchs; finally democracy survived its most severe test (p. 210-213).
