Felipe Arraño Athenian democratic experiment lasted around 200 years, as a greater power was hovering from the Macedonians (p. 233). The Hellenistic world was cosmopolitan, women had more freedom, marriage with foreigners was possible; Athens was seen as a center and source of culture (p. 234). Compared to the fifth century, in the Hellenistic world artists focused more on detail like expressions of individual emotions (p. 236). In the fourth century proper schools sprang up, including teachers such as Plato and Aristotle; the Academy was founded by Plato in 375 BCE and closed in 529 CE (p. 236). Three main branches of philosophy in Hellinistic times were logic, physics, and ethics (p. 238).
