Dan Brown knows how to keep my interest and keep me intrigued and involved. I stayed up until 5 a.m. last night to find out what happened with Robert Langdon and this book's "generic beautiful female along for the ride of her life"TM The story flies along, zipping from location to location and throwing in a giant spider and the world's tallest cross for good measure. The reader will not be bored--in fact, you'll be constantly setting the book aside to Google things like "why do people knock on wood" and "what is a Whiffenpoof" and "Budapest ruin bars," even if they rarely have anything concrete to do with the plot. Traveling along with Dan Brown is like exploring the world with an experienced guide who, nonetheless, refuses to give you the whole tour until the last second. The book manages to tackle some very big topics--in fact, the stakes in this book are higher than ever before, when Langdon's friend and student, Edmond Kirsch, promised to reveal an astonishing breakthrough that will change the world forever.

And therein lies the rub. I found the "huge secrets" revealed in this book to be a let-down. One was interesting and something I'd genuinely never encountered before, but the other has been in the public for a while.

As with Brown's other books, this feels like a travelogue of an interesting location--in this case, I'm guessing the author traveled to Spain and had a smashing good time touring Bilbao and Madrid and Barcelona and decided to share with us an intriguing story set in a beautiful location while sprinkling in tidbits of information from the tour guides and Fodor's. "Yes, this staircase has been voted the third most dangerous in the world," the tour guide says, and Dan Brown scribbles it down in his notepad and says (in his mind, not out loud, silly) "what if there were people having a FIGHT on that staircase? Awesome...." The reader, along for the ride, could certainly do worse. On the upside, I REALLY want to visit the Bilbao Guggenheim and the city of Barcelona now--was the book sponsored by the Spanish travel bureau?

As for the pretty sidekick, I understand Langdon needs someone to talk to during his adventures or the entire book would just be him thinking--it's the same reason they always give cops a partner in the movies: exposition. But does it ALWAYS have to be a beautiful, mysterious woman? And Langdon definitely has a type. The problem with this setup is that all the flirting and cute conversations can never lead anywhere because Langdon must remain single for the next book and the generic "next female of the week." The author makes this woman more interesting than most--wait, what? She's got a fiance? Say it ain't so! AND Brown sets up a potential second sidekick that had me going for a while. At this point, Langdon just needs to marry one of these women--I would suggest the fetching Felicity Jones from Inferno--and the two of them can have merry adventures together. But the "random damsel in distress" trope has to go.

If you enjoyed "The DaVinci Code" or Dan Brown's best book, "The Lost Symbol," you'll love this madcap treasure hunt, sprinkled with interesting facts the author has gleaned from surfing the web. I still don't know why they didn't make "The Lost Symbol," set in Washington DC, into a movie. It was the most visual and interesting of the Landon books. Maybe it's too much like "National Treasure" for Hollywood to tackle. So, set aside some time to get immersed into this tome, and don't worry about the page count--you won't even notice it. And do take the time to come up for air and Google all the strange facts and weird asides that appear seemingly on every page. Remember, it's a treasure hunt, so get to work! ...more "
