This is going to be fun: A storytelling show at the Cornelia Street Cafe in New York City! I'll be joined by an amazing line-up of writers, poets, satirists, including Julianna Forlano, Tia Lewis, and Victoria Redel, and hosted by Peter Carlaftes and Kat Georges. This Friday, August 1, 6-8 PM, 29 Cornelia Street, Greenwich Village.

Island Practice on the train!
The Island Practice audiobook somehow got on New York's Metropolitan Transit Authority website. Not sure how that happened. I guess folks can plan a train trip and download the book at the same time. No doubt Joe Barrett's great recording of the book will make a Metro North commute much more pleasant.

Why Wasn't It "The Grapes of Glee"?
Great fun talking to such impressive literary figures for this story: Jane Smiley, Chang-rae Lee, Anne Bernays, Lorin Stein ... all of them incisive, witty, and gracious.

Island Practice event in Litchfield, CT
Yes, it's January. But there's never a bad time to think about Nantucket. So if you're in or near western Connecticut next week, come to the Island Practice event at the lovely public library in Litchfield, Connecticut. They're even serving wine and cheese. January 16th, 7PM, Oliver Wolcott Library.

Authors Helping the Philippines
I'm happy to be participating in "Authors for the Philippines" - a way to help raise money for the victims of the heartbreaking destruction on those beautiful islands. You can bid for a signed copy of Island Practice - and also donations from many other writers and editors. It's one small way to help.

A Novelist Reveals A Secret He Kept for 18 Years
It was a great pleasure to spend time with Martin Cruz Smith and his wife for this piece in which he revealed his long struggle with Parkinson's disease. He was eloquent, funny, humble, and honest.

Literary Reading Literally Makes You a Better Person
I stole that line from Martha Plimpton, who just tweeted it about a piece I wrote - about a study that found that reading literary fiction helps you become more empathetic and improves your emotional intelligence. http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/10...
Read the story and take our quiz.
They didn't look at narrative nonfiction, the genre of "Island Practice" - I'd love to know what they'd find if they did.

The Island Review
Well, this is a nice surprise: The Island Review, an innovative and visually beautiful online magazine dedicated to all things island, has published a piece I wrote about a floating island. This was before I started working on my book "Island Practice," and it was quite a fun story to do - wonder if the island is still floating around. All you lovers of actual and metaphorical islands, check out The Island Review - I bet you can even suggest story ideas for them. http://www.theislandreview.com/an-isl...

Island Jazz on Nantucket!
Trying to think of thematically relevant tunes to play at our August 21 "Island Jazz" gig on Nantucket. Since Island Practice's Dr. Tim Lepore will be there - and since he is a surgeon and tick expert, among other things - I'm toying with "I've Got You Under My Skin." Maybe Dr. L could play a solo on one of his hand-carved obsidian scalpels. https://www.facebook.com/events/54103...
