Listopia > [Quality] Magic
Fiction: titles with the format: [descriptor] Magic.
______ Magic. One word (or two), ends in "Magic". That's it.
Examples of acceptable titles:
White Magic
Toadstool Magic
Stupid Magic
Extra-strength Magic
Mighty Muffin Magic
"______ Magic", "_____-_____ Magic", "____ _____ Magic" but where the second word isn't a conjunction (of, than, and, or, etc.). Accepted exceptions are compounded titles, i.e. GrimMagic, or doubled-up titles like Fire Magic, Water Magic, since both parts would fit the format individually. An Obsolete Magic and The Foreign Magic are less desirable due to the articles (an, the), but are alright. Same goes for possessive magic (i.e. Freda's Magic); less cool, but alright.
PLEASE EXCLUDE titles which have further modifiers (conjunctions) such as 'of' or 'than'. Examples of titles that DO NOT qualify are: The Colour of Magic (great book, but not for this list!), Stronger than Magic, Sorcery and Magic, Ruby's Magic Shoes. The words "Magical" & "Magician" should not appear!

Thank you, Marc! I lack this ability myself. :( I appreciate this, though - it's a very specific formula, and it looks like people haven't been paying close attention when adding. :(
So I'm, like, erm, grammatically challenged. I'd like to appeal to all readers to help me with the wording of this list - it still seems to be causing confusion, and I am out of ideas. I don't think I've described it a succinctly as I could - open to suggestions!_______ Magic.
That's it. One word, two if I'm generous for the _______, and it ENDS in MAGIC.
Fart Magic.
Word Magic.
Stinky Green Magic.
Listopia-lover Magic.
Just this sort of thing. Starts with [a word], ends with "Magic" (or Magick - I'm not super picky on that front).
Bon Magique
Or Magie if it's German:
Seltsamer Magie
(zum beispiel)... ;)
And please - if you have space in your voting quota, please up-vote some votes of others that you find pleasing, to effectively edge down the outliers so they're not crowding the top of the list. :)
How stringent is the "Fiction" requirement for this list? Because Big Magic fits the title criteria just fine, but it is non-fiction, so I wasn't sure about up-voting it...
Okay, I deleted like 50 books. Let me know if I missed any.(insert cliched rant about how NOBODY ON GOODREADS CAN READ)
I also deleted Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic Moments, and Assorted Hijinks, which was the only straggler I spotted.
Cap'n, how do you feel about Like Magic? "Like" isn't a quality or a descriptor here, but I wasn't sure if that was a dealbreaker.
Yeah, I'm not thrilled by it... :S Especially as it's so high on the list. I can't really think of the clear wording to exclude it - open to suggestions, and I'll optimise the header further! :)
It sounds like you're looking for (optional determiner) (one-word descriptor of "magic") ("magic"). But I don't think putting it that way will clarify anything. I'll delete Like Magic, though, and any others I see!
Deleted Touch Magic and Twice Magic. I didn't see Like Magic, so maybe someone else took care of it (or else I missed it).Touch in Touch Magic is a verb, based on the book description. Twice Magic is less clear, so if anyone who's read the book wants to argue this one, we could add it back in.
Also deleted Flea Market Magic and Wild Water Magic. If the publishers had bothered to spell those two-word descriptors correctly, with hyphens, we'd be golden; alas.
Thanks for working your Brutal Magic, Daisy! :D Pruning Magic, Deletion Magic, Severe Magic... nice. :) Thanks!
I thought Flea Market Magic was okay based on the example in the header of Mighty Muffin Magic as acceptable. I am totally fine with excluding it, but if you don't want two-word qualities that are not hyphenated, I would suggest taking that example out of the header. Also I would edit
"______ Magic. One word (or two), ends in "Magic""
in the header to
"______ Magic. One word followed by "Magic""
And likewise change
""______ Magic", "_____-_____ Magic", "____ _____ Magic" but where the second word isn't a conjunction (of, than, and, or, etc.). "
to
""______ Magic" or "_____-_____ Magic". "
No, Adele, you are quite right - I was fine with a two-word, unhyphenated title. I myself had Red Hart Magic in there as well.I will add these back in. Sorry for the confusion.
The problem really is that I'm not so adept at expressing myself clearly. :) I do rely on those examples to guide users, because I can't think of a way to adequately verbalise those 'double-barrelled but single concept' titles (i.e. Red Hart Magic).
I get Daisy's point, that grammatically they ought to be hyphenated (right? I'm not an expert!!), but I wouldn't want to exclude something that fits the 'spirit' of what I'm going for here.
I'm starting to regret even starting this list, for the confusion and trouble it causes! :) My original idea was all of the Andre Norton Magic titles (they fit my idea: Octagon Magic,Red Hart Magic , Lavender-Green Magic), and Elisabeth Beresford's Magic titles (such as Strange Magic, Sea Green Magic), and Wet Magic by E. Nesbit, Moth-Kin Magic, Half Magic...
It all makes sense in my head, anyway. :(
Well, bumpy start, but I have to be grateful for all the kind pruning help I've had to begin with. Now hopefully the list will continue to grow nice and straight... was in rough shape for awhile, and needed some serious chopping!Onwards and upwards, and thanks VERY MUCH to everyone who has had an interest in this list and who has contributed to it, one way or the other - I appreciate it all. :)
And thanks for your collective patience. :) I appreciate regular pruning: if a passing Librarian spots errant titles, permission granted to axe 'em!
