*Please* do not add to this list unless you are *sure* that the book is part of the Heinemann/Longman/Pearson African Writers Series. The African Writers Series is a series of books by African writers that has been published by Heinemann and Longman (now Pearson) since 1962. The series has ensured an international voice to major African writers—including Chinua Achebe, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, Steve Biko, Ama Ata Aidoo, Nadine Gordimer, Buchi Emecheta, and Okot p'Bitek.

This is a list I want to return to for reading ideas. There are so many here that interest me just from the title.

Aubrey, this is a great list. Thank you. Nabse and friends: Yohannes Ishi does not belong on this list as it is not part of the African Writer's Series. This is not intended for self-promotion.
The list needs to be cleaned again because some books aren't a part of the AWS. For example Os Transpatentes.
Also I don't know if you (Aubrey?) want to keep this list specific to Heinemann's AWS because, from what I have read there have been multiple such as Longman’s Drumbeat, Fontana’s Africa series, and Oxford’s Three Crowns. I think the book The Beggars' Strike is a part of Longman's AWS. Here is a recent article that mentions this...https://www.laphamsquarterly.org/roun...

Oh bother, coming back here to check on something, I can see that there are heaps of books that don't belong. It is meant to be *only* books that were issued as part of the Heinemann African Writers Series from 1962 until it lapsed and was then restarted by Pearson Education. It now includes Longman Writers series too. It is not meant to be an 'African reading list', there are plenty of other lists like that at GR.
Unfortunately the AWS list at Wikipedia says it's not complete, but I used that as a guide to what should be here, and then did an additional search for any titles not listed there, and if the book wasn't ever published by Heinemann or Longman as part of the series, I've deleted them. They seem to be mostly *sigh* self-published books though there were a couple of others from mainstream publishers.
I'd be grateful if others who want to add to the list stick to using that too.
PS I have spent over two hours carefully checking every single book in the list and I really don't want to do it again. If books are added that shouldn't be there, please let me know here which title it is that needs to be removed, thanks.
