I’ve started to really warm up to this and it was all because I remembered to look at these essays and how they play into each other. There are some far stronger reads here than others and the strong essays really resonate with me, especially ones on culture which I don’t rlly think about when I think of policy

Ingrid is on page 227 of 444 of Coffeeland: One Man's Dark Empire and the Making of Our Favorite Drug
Chapter 18 on the coffee question draws parallels to life today. Consumers and the govt alike debated how cheap was too cheap for coffee. Plantation managers themselves struggled financially, meaning that they also benefited from a market that paid workers accurately for their labor. Nowadays I’m not sure if managers of cheap labor are under the same financial struggles

Ingrid is on page 188 of 444 of Coffeeland: One Man's Dark Empire and the Making of Our Favorite Drug
Chapters 13-15 were super good, discussed beginning of thermodynamics and scientists’ obsession with controlling plantations using calories and concepts of work and energy. This proved difficult to do due to human nature and people refusing to work. Unfortunately humans aren’t machines, yay human nature

Very very interesting book so far. I’m learning about things that are completely new to me like mushroom picking and tying them to things that I’m kinda of familiar with like postcapitalism. Honestly a very fascinating read it just is a dense book so it takes me a while to get through it

Again great great book. First third or so focused on late 1800s-1920s water and its management mostly through local water resource boards. Now there’s a heavy focus on the Bureau of Reclamation and its work 20s-60s. Crazy that water became a way to earn power and political status and that no sort of long term thinking seemed to go on at this time about how much water we were using and would have left

Great history book. Comes to show how much of the problems we have nowadays just come from people chasing money and overdeveloping land that was never meant to be lived on

First chapter went into an overview of how Appalachians went from being well regarded to thought of as peasants and poor. Second chapter is focusing on capitalism and communism and how they negatively view people who live off the land

I’m staying up late to finish this book, that’s all you need to know. Author does a good job of describing the realities behind religion we’ll enough to get someone to question their morals

LOVE this book so far. Takes me back to high school theology but without the extreme undertones of Catholicism is the only right way, gay people suck, women shouldn’t get abortions etc etc. religion is so beautiful to study and read about and it’s one of the main ways I understand society so it’s very good to read this book

Ingrid is finished with Sacred Clowns
So I’ve technically finished the book lol, but I do have the end notes to read. This was honestly one of the best books I’ve ever read. It was gripping throughout, down to the gritty court details that I wouldn’t be able to fully grasp if anyone else had written this book. Honestly shocking what money and power can do in this country.

Joan Didon is a great writer. It’s so moving to read about her journey with grief and I feel like it came at a right time in my life too. I feel like it also makes a good day read if I was so committed to reading. Summertime maybe

Co op really took a lot out of me lol. Burning sweet grass is another great section. Perfect wrap up to the book with a blurb on how sweetgrass is ceremonially burned. The superfund chapter was a wonderful read as it connects to things that I’ll be doing with my life. Restoring superfund sites is not just about meeting a quota but actually restoring the earth to what it used to be. Great little section.

Just finished a really good chapter on old-growth forests, and Franz, who was trying to restore one. Braiding sweet grass may be my favorite part of the book. It feels like now I have a deep connection to sweetgrass since I’ve seen it be planted and grown and picked. This part of the book describes its true essence, how it can be used to better society, and how we can help it do that
