Angie is starting Holly (Holly Gibney, #3)
Holly is probably my favorite Stephen King book in 10 years! I’m about 3/4 of the way through and I just cannot put it down. Not only is the title character one of the best Stephen King characters ever, she’s one of the best fictional characters, period. My only complaint is that I now want to become a vegetarian and my decades old fear of strangers has been reactivated.

I’m about 3/4 away through and I have to say: this is my favorite Stephen King book in years! There’s so much I want to say about it but, for right now, I’ll commit to two things: it’s reactivated my decades old fear of stranger danger AND it makes me want to become a vegetarian again. Holly it’s not only my favorite Stephen King character ever but possibly one of my favorite fictional characters.

It's true I'm not far in yet, but so far I'm feeling more connected with and invested in this book than I have with any read in ages. I have been struggling with finding the perfect lesfic novel for quite some time and I think this may be it...

Angie is reading My Little Green Girlfriend (Little Green, #1)
I usually only refer to my cat as absolutely precious, but I may have to use those words to describe My Little Green Girlfriend. It is very cute and sweet read without being nauseating at all. It reflects values you don't always see in lesfic and it has darn likable characters, surprisingly realistic plot points and a pace that keeps you stuck to the page. My only regret is that it's almost over :(

Angie is starting Mr. Right Is Dead: Stories
So far, I’m finding this to be a terrific collection and I’m remembering how much I used to like Rona Jaffe’s writing and am glad to have rediscovered her.

Angie is reading Ducks, Newburyport
...On the other hand, I keep reading and I just get so many of the feelings the main character is experiencing and the things she makes observations about. It's almost as if this is a cataloguing of all kinds of personal and pop culture references and _this_ is what makes the book so fascinating for me.

I have such mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand I feel frustrated with the format and the ongoing use of "the fact that..." Despite the overwhelmingly positive reaction and reception to _Ducks, Newburyport_, I feel like I'm in "The Emperor's New Clothes," in the sense that it's like I'm the only one who is not completely smitten with this and does not see what everyone else is seeing...

Angie is reading Telling Lies Online
It's a shame this well-written romance, with one very likable character and one very questionable one, is hard to endorse. Having had been "catfished" by someone, I have absolutely no patience (or sympathy) for people who tell lies online...especially ones as big as the one Jay tells. What she does is not "dumb" (the word she herself uses) but immoral...I just cannot get past the concept this book is built on...

Angie is starting American Housewife
I'm pretty sure I would not like to meet any of the women in this book...on the other hand, I cannot put this collection of short stories down. It is a fast and fascinating read and, at times, I feel as if it is being channeled by a mean version of the delightfully funny Erma Bombeck. I usually prefer to like the people in the stories I read, but I just cannot look away...

...I think, for me, the problem is that the two main characters do not feel fully fleshed out and I'm letting my frustrations with "Mother Erin" get in the way. On the other hand I think of people who have said you can't be gay and Christian and I so, so, so want this book to work for me as I think you can be both...I don't mean to on so much, I just wasn't expecting to be so affected by this in the way that I am.

...then how can you date another woman and engage in passionate kissing? It seems to me that the main character wants to bypass the clause, which is frustrating to me, though, as a spiritual person, I do understand the deep and painful struggles that come with being a gay Christian. I like the writing and the topics the writer is willing to openly discuss, but there is also something missing I can't put my finger on.

I honestly don't know what to make of this book...despite its sincere and very interesting take on being committed to one's faith while also being gay, I find it a bit inconsistent at times. If you are clergy in a church that is not terribly gay friendly and wants you to sign a "celibacy clause," how you can also preside over a lesbian wedding at that same church? If you ARE willing to commit to the clause... (TBC)

I have no words for how this is affecting me. One Day You’ll Leave Me (also by this author) is stunning in a way that is different than how stunning this read is. The former is stunning in story, character and setting. This is stunning in that it speaks to emotions only those who have lived what the narrator has lived can truly ever know😔

The first time I tried to read this I really had trouble getting in to it and now I wonder why on earth. I’m so glad I decided to revisit Drawn and try again as it is good and different and (so far) up to the challenge of following a spectacular book I finished earlier today...

Angie is reading Lies of Omission (Passing Rites, #3)
Do you ever feel like you need an antidote for how you feel after reading a romance novel? So far, this is a perfect one and an excellent read. I'm not surprised, though, as Elena Graf is a superb writer who has a way with words that reach out and grab you and make you glad you could follow up a good book with a great one...

...I find myself both shocked and appalled that I cannot put this down and that I actually want to know what happens next. So many parts of this (even if they are "a product of their time") are outdated and offensive and yet I still read on, as if I can't help it when I know I very well can.

Angie is on page 100 of 240 of The Rarest Rose
When I was a teenager I was very attached to books by Phyllis A. Whitney. With its strong gothic romance bent, The Rarest Rose is extremely appealing to me and the teenage part of me is silently cheering that the two leads are female, something I wished could have been possible when I was reading Phyllis A. Whitney in the 1980s.

I am a bit disappointed so far, though I have found some parts I can really relate to...It's not that I want this book to be full of angst and unhappiness, but I do think things kick off too soon and too fast and that the themes that drew me to this in the description are not as deep as I thought they would be. And I find Emily, one of the two main characters, to be very immature, though possibly this will change.

Angie is starting Under Your Skin (On The Record, #2)
This may be the best sequel I've ever read. It is rare, I think, for a book that follows a couple after their Happily Ever After to not delve into tons of melodrama in order to shake things up. Though Catherine and Lauren do face outside obstacles there is a refreshing lack of soap opera-ish "let's break them up to put them back together again" plot devices. Other pluses: genuine mystery and secondary characters.

One thing you can always count on when starting a Lee Winter book is that you will be in for a good read...and, in this case, a chance to reconnect with favorite characters. So far, so very good :)

I should find the angst annoying, but I don't because I know painfully well how the main character feels. Despite this, I really do not like the thought of where the novel might go AND I do not like how the main character is stringing along her girlfriend. This may sound harsh, but when your heart belongs to someone else I don't think it is fair to get involved with someone who has no idea your heart's not in it :(

Angie is starting Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine March/April 2018 Vol. 151 Nos. 3 & 4 Whole Nos. 918 & 919
I can say not only is this the best issue of EQMM I can ever remember reading, it is one of the best collections of short stories, period. It is not that I don’t cry, but I find I do not cry as much with stories these days and that _did_ happen with “Sofee” by David Dean, a man who captures children beautifully in a way very few adult writers can...a lovely, sad, scary, unforgettable story <3

The very first story in here ("Health and Safety" by Liza Cody) is just amazing and reminds me of why I loved EQMM so much when I was younger and collected every issue rather fervently. I am looking forward to reading the rest of the issue.

I was drawn in by the cover and I think (so far, at least) that the story more than lives up to the cover's uniqueness. At first I was a little disappointed it is not a romance, but, now, I am so into the story and even kind of wanting a break from a romantic story that I am glad I saw this in the Bold Strokes Books electronic newsletter. It is very well-written and I look forward to getting back to it.
