Achilles slaughters the Trojans and their allies who were cornered and trapped in the river, fighting without remorse, his heart stricken by grief and anger
— “when sons encounter me, their parents weep” is CRAZY
— the river, the scamander, gets angry at achilles, “but even if great Zeus, the son of Cronus, enables you to slaughter all the Trojans, at least drive them away from me. Perform your horrifying actions on the plain. My lovely streams have been clogged up with corpses. I cannot freely pour my waters down into the shining sea, because the bodies choke me, yet you keep killing even more, annihilating everyone. Come on, leader of troops, stop now! This is too much.” To which Achilles agrees, “It will be as you say divine Scamander. But I will massacre these arrogant Trojans, not stopping till I them in their city and fight with Hector, man to man, and see if he defeats me or I conquer him.”
—the scamander basically tries to wash away achilles and achilles pleads to zeus, pitying himself and blaming his mother for believing he’d die either by hector’s hands or within troy’s city walls. poseidon and athena appear and reassure him of his fate and that he will win and do what he yearns for: the river will eventually quit and achilles won’t die here, he’ll eventually storm troy, kill hector, and return to the ships
— hera, protecting achilles from the rivers surging to stop him and to protect the trojans from their doom, has hephaestus send down holy fire. the river then makes a deal with hera to stop the onslaught and the river retreats
— agenor gets in achilles way to defend troy and its people. apollo whisks him from the battle and puts himself, disguised as agenor, in his place, distracting/tricking him while the people and soldiers of Troy flee and hide inside the city
