Felipe Arraño First ten years of the Peloponnesian War are often called the Arkhidamian War (p. 183). In 430, during the war, a terrible plague caused the dead of a third of Athens’ population (p. 185). Towns and cities, led by Sparta, wanted to liberate Greece from the tyranny of the Athenian Empire (p. 186). By the end of the war the bulk of the Athenian population shifted towards the city (p. 190). The Arkhidamian War ended in disappointment and frustration for both sides, both abandoned important gains, and peace lasted 50 years (p. 191).
