This can be nature (trees, animals), AI/robots, aliens (/other species), nonliving / inanimate objects, etc. Hopefully a large component of the book, if not the main focus of a human having or discovering a deep connection Non-humans and empathy.
This can be nature (trees, animals), AI/robots, aliens (/other species), nonliving / inanimate objects, etc. Hopefully a large component of the book, if not the main focus of a human having or discovering a deep connection and curiosity/contemplation and forming empathy with/towards these non-humans.
* PREFERENCE for FICTION but not required if it get's deep enough into the emotional attachment side of things, beyond just a science, (Overstory being a good example for this).
* PREFERENCE for existence OF empathy over lack of empathy, but both can absolutely be themes - I expect they more likely come together. Happy endings not required .

RATINGS SYSTEM: I have an expansive sorting system, my "to-read" shelf is a mess, and many books are yet to be sorted. Paying attention to where I've filed things may give spoilers, so be warned! A handful of old ratings I may not agree with now (some of which I may reread and then re-rate) & my ratings of books do not automatically reflect my opinions or support for authors.
I have a pretty strict system for rating, and I want to put this out there because I don’t want anyone to be discouraged to read a book that I have given 3-stars! If interested enough to know more:
1 STAR: self-explanatory - I struggled to even enjoy reading it.
2 STARS: Could be okay, but I just didn't enjoy it and it wasn't for me.
3 STARS: Good. If I liked it or thought it was okay but wasn’t totally feeling, esp. any more than I do with most other books, it gets a three. Note I also file 3s into 3-eh or 3-good and others into 3.5 & 4.5 shelves.
3.5 STARS: I liked it more than what I consider an average good read. (I expect most things to fall here for me)
4 STARS: Really good. I almost loved it.
4.5 STARS: I loved it.
5 STARS: I am bonded with this book (for better or for worse). I will probably forever rave about it.
