“রাজনীতির খাতিরে উনি (শেরেবাংলা ফজলুল হক) একাধিকবার দল বা জোট বদল করেছেন। যে ঘটনার কথা লিখতে যাচ্ছি সে ঘটনার সময় উনি মুসলিম লীগের পক্ষে। কৃষক প্রজা দলের ছাত্ররা স্টিমার ঘাটে কালো নিশান নিয়ে বিক্ষোভ দেখাবার জন্য প্রস্তুত হয়েছে। গণ-সমর্থকদের শেখান হয়েছে, হকসাহেব স্টিমারের সিঁড়ি বেয়ে নামলেই তারা নিশান আস্ফালন করে “shame! shame!” বলে ধিক্কার দেবে। কিন্তু ব্যাপারটা একটু গোলমাল হয়ে গেল। ঐ বাঘের মত মানুষটিকে সামনে দেখে নিশানবাহীরা পালাবার পথ পায় না। অতি সঙ্কোচে মুখ হাতে ঢেকে বিক্ষোভকারীরা শ্রীরাহিকার মত নরম সুরে বলল, “ শ্যাম! শ্যাম!” হক সাহেব মুচকি হেসে এগুলেন। পরবর্তী স্টপ আমাদের বাড়ি। সেখানে ওঁর বাল্যবন্ধু ইন্দভূষণ গুপ্ত বসে আছেন সদলে: “আইজ আউক! ফজলুরে আইজ ধোয়ামু”। হক সাহেব ঢোকামত্র ইন্দুবাবুর আক্রমণ: “ফজলু, তর লইগগা ভদ্দরসমাজে আর মুখ দ্যাহান যায় না।“ হক সাবেহ গভীর সহানুভূতির দৃষ্টিতে বালুবন্ধুকে কিছুক্ষণ দেখে বললেন, “হেইলে ত তর বড় মুশকিল! ভদ্দরসমাজে মুখ দ্যাহাইতে পারিস না? তয় হোগাটা দেহাইস।“ এই ঋষি বাক্যের পশ্চিমবঙ্গানুবাদ আর দিলাম না।”

“আসলে ঈশ্বরের সর্বজনস্বীকৃত কোন ইন্টারপ্রিটেশন তো আজও তৈরি হয়নি, মানুষ তাকে কল্পনা করে নেয়। সবার কল্পনা যেহেতু একরকম নয়, একএকজনের ঈশ্বরও তাই একেকরকম। এজন্য ঈশ্বর সম্বন্ধে কোন ধারণার কথা বলা বিপদজনক। ধর্মগ্রন্থে ঈশ্বরের ধারণা খুব পরিষ্কারভাবে পাওয়া যায় না, যেটা পাওয়া যায় সেটা বিভ্রান্তিপূর্ণ। ঈশ্বর যে তাঁর সৃষ্টির মধ্য দিয়ে প্রকাশিত আমি এ কথা বিশ্বাস করি, কারণ তাঁর কোন রূপ নেই, তাঁর কোন বাসস্থানও নেই। ঈশ্বর আকাশে বাস করেন এ কথা নিশ্চয় কেউ বলবে না! সৃষ্টির মধ্যে দিয়ে তিনি যেমন প্রকাশ করেন নিজেকে, তেমনি বসবাসও করেন সৃষ্টির মধ্যেই। তাই যদি হয়, তাহলে, মানুষের মধ্যে দিয়েও তিনি প্রকাশিত এবং বলা যেতে পারে মানুষের মধ্যে দিয়ে তিনি সর্বোত্তমরূপে প্রকাশ করেন নিজেকে এবং বাস করেন মানুষের মধ্যেই। এবং সেক্ষেত্রে তাঁকে মানুষের সমস্ত যন্ত্রনা ভোগ করতে হয়, হয়েছে। মানুষের রোগ-শোক-দুঃখ-কষ্ট-হাসি-কান্না-সুখ-যন্ত্রণা এমনকি মৃত্যুর স্বাদও তাকে গ্রহণ করতে হয়েছে। যে মানুষের মধ্যে দিয়ে তিনি নিজেকে প্রকাশ করেছেন, সেই মানুষের মৃত্যুতে কি তাঁরও মৃত্যু ঘটে যায়নি? এভাবে বহুবার তাঁকে জন্ম ও মৃত্যুর স্বাদ গ্রহণ করতে হয়েছে। আমার কাছে ঈশ্বরের ধারণাটি এমনই-তাকেও সমস্ত মানবিক অনুভূতির মধ্য দিয়ে যেতে হয়।”
