The NYRB Classics series is designedly and determinedly exploratory and eclectic, a mix of fiction and non-fiction from different eras and times and of various sorts. The series includes nineteenth century novels and experimental novels, reportage and belles lettres, tell-all memoirs and learned studies, established classics and cult favorites, literature high, low, unsuspected, and unheard of. NYRB Classics are, to a large degree, discoveries, the kind of books that people typically run into outside of the classroom and then remember for life.

Lobstergirl Voters need to vote on the NYRB edition of the book, not some other edition, as with The Enchanted April (#1). ISBN 1590172256.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads If the one that's already on the list is more popular, will that fix it if they get combined?

message 3: by [deleted user] (last edited Jul 01, 2011 08:08AM) (new)

When you seach for Enchanted April that edition doesn't come up.

ETA: finally found it

Lobstergirl Susanna wrote: "If the one that's already on the list is more popular, will that fix it if they get combined?"

No, the more popular one will stay on the list. That's why people have to make sure they're voting for the NYRB edition, whether they are the first, second, or third person to vote for the book.

message 7: by Jacob (new)

Jacob At last, an NYRB list! I was going to create it myself, but wanted to wait until I read a few more. Only read 16 titles so far, with a few dozen more on my shelves. Glad someone else decided not to procrastinate.

message 8: by Jimmy (new)

Jimmy Jacob! 16 is also my magic number of NYRB books read!

message 9: by Jacob (new)

Jacob Hmm. That sounds like a challenge. Race you to the end!

message 10: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl I've also read 16.

message 11: by Jacob (new)

Jacob You've read Brigadier Gerard! I loved that one.

I've been trying to read them at a regular pace this year--wanted to get through two a month--but floundered. Still, read ten so far this year, and will keep going soon as I can decide what to read next. I highly recommend The Long Ships and Hadrian the Seventh, for those who haven't read them yet.

Lobstergirl With potato sacks.

message 14: by Jacob (new)

Jacob Is anyone else a member of the NYRB Book Club? Their August selection, Hav by Jan Morris, sounds amazing.

message 15: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl No but I get their emails so I know when certain books go on sale.

message 16: by Jimmy (new)

Jimmy No but I follow their twitter.

message 17: by Jimmy (new)

Jimmy Weird that Berlin Stories is at #4, since it's not even released yet. Conspiracy?

message 18: by Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (last edited Aug 02, 2011 11:40AM) (new)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Says on the book info "first published March 1, 1999."

message 19: by Jimmy (new)

Jimmy Where does it say that? When I look at it it says "A New York Review Books Original". So I interpret that to mean this is the first English translation of this book.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Berlin Stories It says "Paperback, 144 pages
Expected publication: October 25th 2011 by New York Review of Books (first published March 1st 1999)" under the book's info.

message 21: by Jimmy (new)

Jimmy I think that might mean when the book was originally published in German, but not this edition of it. I'm pretty sure it hadn't been translated into English before now.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Well, it has been in print for 12 years, and probably the ones who voted for it read it in German.

message 23: by Jacob (new)

Jacob Any way we can remove the two T. Rafael Cimino books (#3 and #11) which are definitely not NYRB titles? Obvious and shameless self-promotion is one thing, but this is ridiculous.

message 24: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl Gone.

message 25: by Jacob (new)

Jacob Thanks.

Themis-Athena (Lioness at Large) Re: Berlin Stories: I don't know when it was first published, but I read it -- in the original German -- some 20+ years ago. (Walser died in 1956, btw.) So the only thing that can possibly be a NYRB original there is the translation ...

message 27: by Moira (new)

Moira Ran out of votes. sigh. Why are these limited to 100 books?

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Dunno. Happens to me too, alas, on some lists.

message 29: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl Moira wrote: "Ran out of votes. sigh. Why are these limited to 100 books?"

It's frustrating. Start a thread in Feedback, and I'll join in.

message 30: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl #66 The Venice Train by Simenon is not a NYRB edition, nor is there a NYRB listed for it that I can see. Delete?

message 31: by Jacob (new)

Jacob Or wait. With NYRB and Simenon, it's probably just a matter of time.

message 32: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl The NYRB edition of The Long Ships is ISBN 1590173465 The Long Ships.

Somehow the Fontana edition had replaced the NYRB edition. I deleted the Fontana edition (sorry). Please vote for the edition above.

message 33: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl I also deleted the Puffin edition of Pinnochio. Please add/vote for the NYRB edition, ISBN 1590172892:

Pinocchio

message 34: by David (new)

David Thanks for this list. Is there a list for contemporary books recommended by the NYROB?

message 35: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl Can we talk about the list being changed from "New York Review Books" to "New York Review Books - Classics"?

As a result, several books I voted for have vanished. Several children's books, as well as Opera and the Morbidity of Music.

Is this what the list creator intended? Seems like an executive decision was made without getting input from the voters. I would have liked for the list to remain as it was.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads Did the list creator request it, or something? It has clearly changed - I have looked at the librarian's log.

message 37: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl I don't know if he knows about it, or requested it. Hopefully he can chime in.

message 38: by Adrian K. (new)

Adrian K. quality list right here

message 39: by Sue (new)

Sue Great list. Hopefully by the end of next year I'll have read some more of those on my tbr.

message 40: by Cathy (new)

Cathy Finally I get here. Been reading NYRB Novels for a while. Just finished with Olivia Manning's "The Balkan War Trilogy" and "The Levant Trilogy". I start telling people about pre-war Romania and they think I'm nuts, but I'm not!! Taking a break (sort of) with "Redeployment". The title of Chapter 3 is "In Viet Nam There Were Girls to Fuck". In just a few words, such a mind blowing-ly different war. Glad to join you, Cathy

message 41: by Cathy (new)

Cathy Jacob wrote: "At last, an NYRB list! I was going to create it myself, but wanted to wait until I read a few more. Only read 16 titles so far, with a few dozen more on my shelves. Glad someone else decided not..."

Which 16 if its not too much typing? I need to count mine, their all on Kindle.

message 42: by J (new)

J Plus these books are so handsome to look at.

message 43: by Andreas (new)

Andreas Lobstergirl wrote: "Voters need to vote on the NYRB edition of the book, not some other edition, as with The Enchanted April (#1). ISBN 1590172256.

"

Same goes for Augustus by John Williams.

message 44: by Kendra (new)

Kendra No, I did not ever request for a title change and I'd have preferred it to include their children's and newer books too.

I've been entirely absent though. Is there a way to transfer ownership to someone more attentive to these lists?

message 45: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl Well, GR considers Listopias to be owned by the community rather than the list creator. I someone disagree as I maintain a proprietary feeling toward many of the lists I create. So in your case if you don't want anything more to do with the list and decisions concerning it, just say so (I guess you just did) and other people can step in. But there's no way to remove yourself as list creator unless you leave GR or delete your account or something along those lines.

Really this list needs pretty much zero maintenance, as people are good about only adding the proper books, unlike a lot of other lists.

Unfortunately, GR has the nasty habit to change a book to the most popular edition when it is voted for more than just the once. I noticed because I have lists with Dutch translations (used by the Netherlands & Flanders group challenges) where, to my surprise and annoyance, Dutch titles I added were replaced by English titles sometimes when the number of votes for a certain title grew :-(
Hopefully your solution works...

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads The cover will always change to the more popular edition (if votes are merged, for example). And sometimes it changes to the most popular edition for no known reason.

John Everett Why are those "Elite Summaries" on the list? I also noticed a couple repeats.
