Life in Suspension reviewed by J.C. Hallman in The Brooklyn Rail

A Poet is a Mood: Life in Suspension reviewed by J.C. Hallman in The Brooklyn Rail

"The Life in Suspension La Vie Suspendue by Helene Cardona Life in Suspension La Vie Suspendue by Helene Cardona Life in Suspension La Vie Suspendue by Helene Cardona dual-language aspect of this surprising volume, which just as often will have you thinking of Rumi and Rilke and Neruda, offers a unique archaeology-style pleasure of penetrating a psychic poetic cavity that generally remains undisturbed... And… you remember being with the poet for these moments stolen from an unlikely life."

"But Cardona is different, I think, and [her] dissertation on James is the clue. In both letters and fiction, James asserted that all the arts are one, and what he meant was that a novel can aspire to do what the gigantic Tintorettos in the Louvre do. In short, we should no sooner segregate media than people....[These poems] compile to form the chronicle of a traveler, without fixed language, without fixed nationality or profession, moving physically from Bar Harbor to Chalkidiki (it’s Greece), and emotionally from the calm of floating alone on a lake to the inner hurricane of watching a loved one slip from this world to the next. En route, there are these poetic hesitations, the vibrancy of life trapped in amber."

Birnam Wood reviewed by Rustin Larson in The Iowa Source

Birnam Wood / El Bosque de Birnam (Salmon Poetry, 2018) is reviewed by Rustin Larson in The Iowa Source:
https://www.iowasource.com/2018/06/29...
"In years, I have not read a poetry more expansive, gripping, and beautiful for the Birnam Wood El Bosque de Birnam (English and Spanish Edition) by José Manuel Cardona Birnam Wood El Bosque de Birnam (English and Spanish Edition) by José Manuel Cardona Birnam Wood El Bosque de Birnam (English and Spanish Edition) by José Manuel Cardona true music of language. I have been enthusiastically revitalized by the recent encounter with the poetry of José Manual Cardona, masterfully translated by his daughter, poet Hélène Cardona. In her hands, Birnam Wood sings to us in a rendering that is lush and passionate." —Rustin Larson, The Iowa Source

Birnam Wood reviewed in The Los Angeles Review

Birnam Wood is a spell-binding, spell-bound book. José Manuel Cardona was one of many Spanish intellectuals exiled by the Franco government, and the poems reflect the anguish and longings of the exile, embodied most powerfully in the figure of Odysseus.

"Such yearning towards the divine in Cardona’s poetic voice is reinforced by a proclivity towards enchantment and mysticism."
